Abstract

A method and apparatus for communicating with entities outside of a secure network by intercepting and modifying messages is provided. Techniques for accomplishing the communication include inserting, retrieving, and deleting information from messages. The entities involved in the communication include, but are not limited to, users, content providers, and access providers. Furthermore, the types of information used in modifying messages include billing, location, demographic information, profile data, multimedia data, and code.

Claims (56)

1. A method for communicating electronic information comprising the computer-implemented steps of:

intercepting, at an intermediary, a message sent from a service provider to a service requestor;

wherein the message from the service provider is a reply to a request from the service requestor for a particular service and wherein the message includes:

a) content associated with the particular service, and

b) restriction information, selected by the service provider for inclusion in the message based on the particular service that was requested by the service requestor, about one or more restrictions that limit conditions under which the service requestor is permitted to receive the content that is included in the message;

without requiring communication from the service provider, the intermediary performing the following steps in response to intercepting the message:

reading the restriction information from the message;

determining, based on information that is not included in the message, whether providing the content to the service requestor would violate any restrictions specified in the restriction information that the was selected by the service provider based on the particular service that was requested by the service requestor;

in response to determining that no restrictions specified in the restriction information would be violated by providing the content to the service requestor, transmitting, via the intermediary, the message containing the content to the service requestor;

wherein the method is performed by one or more computing devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the restriction information comprises billing information.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the restriction information comprises fee information identifying a fee associated with the particular service.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the intermediary further performs the following step in response to intercepting the message:

determining, based on the fee associated with the particular service, whether the service requestor has sufficient funds to pay for the particular service.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the intermediary further performs the following step in response to intercepting the message:

deducting the fee associated with the particular service from the funds of the service requestor.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermediary further performs the following step in response to intercepting the message:

determining, based on a user profile associated with the service requestor, whether the service requestor is authorized to purchase the particular service.

7. A volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium comprising one or more sequences of instructions, which, when executed by one or more processors, cause one or more computing devices to perform operations comprising:

intercepting, at an intermediary, a message sent from a service provider to a service requestor;

wherein the message from the service provider is a reply to a request from the service requestor for a particular service and wherein the message includes:

a) content associated with the particular service and

b) restriction information, selected by the service provider for inclusion in the message based on the particular service that was requested by the service requestor, about one or more restrictions that limit conditions under which the service requestor is permitted to receive the content that is included in the message;

without requiring communication from the service provider, the intermediary performing the following steps in response to intercepting the message:

reading the restriction information from the message;

determining, based on information that is not included in the message, whether providing the content to the service requestor would violate any restrictions specified in the restriction information that the was selected by the service provider based on the particular service that was requested by the service requestor;

in response to determining that no restrictions specified in the restriction information would be violated by providing the content to the service requestor, transmitting, via the intermediary, the message containing the content to the service requestor.

8. The volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the restriction information comprises billing information.

9. The volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the restriction information comprises fee information identifying a fee associated with the particular service.

10. The volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the one or more sequences of instructions further cause the intermediary to perform the following operation in response to intercepting the message:

determining, based on the fee associated with the particular service, whether the service requestor has sufficient funds to pay for the particular service.

11. The volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the one or more sequences of instructions further cause the intermediary to perform the following operation in response to intercepting the message:

deducting the fee associated with the particular service from the funds of the service requestor.

12. The volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the one or more sequences of instructions further cause the intermediary to perform the following operation in response to intercepting the message:

determining, based on a user profile associated with the service requestor, whether the service requestor is authorized to purchase the particular service.

13. A proxy server comprising:

one or more processors;

logic coupled to the one or more processors comprising one or more sequences of instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors cause the proxy server to perform operations comprising:

intercepting, at the proxy server, a message sent from a service provider to a service requestor;

wherein the message from the service provider is a reply to a request from the service requestor for a particular service and wherein the message includes:

a) content associated with the particular service and

b) restriction information, selected by the service provider for inclusion in the message based on the particular service that was requested by the service requestor, about one or more restrictions that limit conditions under which the service requestor is permitted to receive the content that is included in the message;

without requiring communication from the service provider, the proxy server performing the following operations in response to intercepting the message:

reading the restriction information from the message;

determining, based on information that is not included in the message, whether providing the content to the service requestor would violate any restrictions specified in the restriction information that the was selected by the service provider based on the particular service that was requested by the service requestor;

in response to determining that no restrictions specified in the restriction information would be violated by providing the content to the service requestor, transmitting, via the proxy server, the message containing the content to the service requestor.

14. The proxy server of claim 13 , wherein the restriction information comprises billing information.

15. The proxy server of claim 14 , wherein the restriction information comprises fee information identifying a fee associated with the particular service.

16. The proxy server of claim 15 , wherein the one or more sequences of instructions further cause the proxy server to perform the following operation in response to intercepting the message:

determining, based on the fee associated with the particular service, whether the service requestor has sufficient funds to pay for the particular service.

17. The proxy server of claim 16 , wherein the one or more sequences of instructions further cause the proxy server to perform the following operation in response to intercepting the message:

deducting the fee associated with the particular service from the funds of the service requestor.

18. The proxy server of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sequences of instructions further cause the proxy server to perform the following operation in response to intercepting the message:

determining, based on a user profile associated with the service requestor, whether the service requestor is authorized to purchase the particular service.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein said determining, based on information that is not included in the message, whether providing the content to the service requestor would violate any restrictions specified in the restriction information is further based on information within a private network that is not accessible to the service provider.

20. The volatile or non-volatile computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein said determining, based on information that is not included in the message, whether providing the content to the service requestor would violate any restrictions specified in the restriction information is further based on information within a private network that is not accessible to the service provider.
