Abstract

A cord drive mechanism to convert linear motion to circular motion for use in coverings for architectural openings. Various controls are used to provide a braking force on the cord. Some of the embodiments incorporate a capstan.

Claims (9)

1. A covering for an architectural opening, comprising:

an extendable material movable from an extended position for covering the opening to a retracted position for uncovering the opening;

a drive spool mounted for rotation and operatively connected to said extendable material, wherein said drive spool rotates in a first direction to extend said extendable material and said drive spool rotates in a second direction to retract said extendable material;

a drive cord having first and second ends, said first end of said drive cord being attached to said drive spool; and

first and second brakes operatively connected in series to said drive cord, with said drive cord extending from said drive spool to said first brake and then to said second brake, wherein braking engagement of said second brake with said drive cord provides tension on said drive cord which increases the braking force of the first brake on the drive cord; and

wherein said second brake includes a pivoting locking dog including a pinching edge, wherein the pivoting locking dog is pivotable from a braking position in which the pinching edge selectively pinches the drive cord to a disengaged position in which the drive cord is released.

2. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 1 , wherein said first brake includes a capstan mounted for selective rotation, and said drive cord is wrapped around said capstan.

3. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 1 , wherein pulling on the second end of said drive cord unwinds the drive cord from the drive spool and causes the drive spool to rotate in the second direction in order to retract the extendable material.

4. A covering for an architectural opening as recited in claim 2 , wherein pulling on the second end of said drive cord unwinds the drive cord from the drive spool and causes the drive spool to rotate in the second direction in order to retract the extendable material.
