Abstract

A system and method for routing calls from a communication system in a VoIP network to an external network. The communication system comprises a plurality of communicating nodes. The communication system is configured to request routing information from a register associated with the external network for routing a communication to a subscriber of the external network, receive routing information from the register, and establish an external connection from the VoIP network for routing the communication to the external network based on the routing information.

Claims (37)

1. A communication system in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VolP) virtual private network comprising:

A command center configured to

(i) request routing information from a register associated with a wireless network for routing a packet based communication to a subscriber of the wireless network;

(ii) receive routing information from the register;

(iii) determine a first destination associated with the communication is not reachable; and

(iv) route the communication to a second destination based on a profile associated with the subscriber;

a first gateway configured to receive the communication addressed to the subscriber of the wireless network; and

a second gateway configured to establish an external connection for routing the communication to the wireless network based on the routing information.

2. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the external connection is a traditional telephony link.

3. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the external connection is a connection to the wireless network through at least one of one or more intermediate exchanges and networks.

4. The communication system of claim 1 further configured to receive the routing information from the wireless network through an SS7 gateway.

5. A method of routing a communication from a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network to a subscriber of an external communications network, the method comprising:

at the VoIP network:

receiving the communication at a first gateway in the VoIP network;

requesting routing information from a register associated with the external communications network;

receiving routing information from the register;

routing the communication from the first gateway to a second gateway in the VoIP network based on the routing information; and

establishing an external connection from the second gateway for routing the communication to the external communications network based on the routing information;

determining a first destination associated with the communication is not reachable; and

routing the communication to a second destination based on a profile associated with the subscriber.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the external communications network is a wireless network.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the external connection is a traditional telephony link.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the external connection is a connection to the external communications network through at least one of one or more intermediate exchanges and networks.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the external connection is a connection to the external communications network through at least one of one or more intermediate exchanges and networks.

10. A method of routing a communication from a VoIP virtual private network (VPN) to a subscriber of an external communications network, the method comprising:

receiving the communication in a communication system of the VPN;

requesting by the communication system through a signal path routing information from a register associated with the external communications network;

receiving in the communication system routing information from the register through the signal path;

routing the communication from the communication system through an external connection to the external communications network based on the routing information;

determining a first destination associated with the communication is not reachable; and

routing the communication to a second destination based on a profile associated with the subscriber.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the external communications network is a wireless network.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the external connection is a traditional telephony link.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the external connection is a connection to the external communications network through at least one of one or more intermediate exchanges and networks.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein, the communication system receives the routing information through an SS7 gateway.

15. The method of claim 5 , wherein the profile is maintained in the register of the external communications network.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the profile is maintained in the register of the external communications network.
