Abstract

A method of coating a honeycomb monolith substrate comprising a plurality of channels with a liquid comprising a catalyst component comprises the steps of: (i) holding a honeycomb monolith substrate substantially vertically; (ii) introducing a pre-determined volume of the liquid into the substrate via open ends of the channels at a lower end of the substrate; (iii) sealingly retaining the introduced liquid within the substrate; (iv) inverting the substrate containing the retained liquid; and (v) applying a vacuum to open ends of the channels of the substrate at the inverted, lower end of the substrate to draw the liquid along the channels of the substrate.

Claims (12)

1. A method of coating a honeycomb monolith substrate comprising a plurality of channels with a liquid comprising a catalyst component, which method comprising the steps of:

(i) holding a honeycomb monolith substrate substantially vertically;

(ii) introducing a pre-determined volume of the liquid into the substrate via open ends of the channels at a lower end of the substrate with a liquid introducing means, wherein the liquid introducing means comprises a piston that reciprocates within a cylinder;

(iii) sealingly retaining the introduced liquid within the substrate;

(iv) inverting the substrate containing the retained liquid; and

(v) applying a vacuum to open ends of the channels of the substrate at the inverted, lower end of the substrate to draw the retained liquid along the channels of the substrate.

2. A method according to claim 1 , comprising a step between step (i) and (ii) of sealing an outer surface of the substrate from open ends of the channels at the lower end of the substrate.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein in step (v) the seal retaining the liquid is removed only following application of the vacuum.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a filter.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the piston reciprocates within the cylinder between a first position wherein a surface of the piston head abuts or aligns with a cylinder head, and a second position wherein an internal wall of the cylinder, cylinder head and piston head define a displacement volume.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein step (i) is (i) holding a honeycomb monolith substrate substantially vertically with a holding means, wherein the holding means comprises a housing for receiving at least the lower end of the substrate, and an inflatable collar disposed on an internal surface of the housing for engaging with an outer surface of the substrate.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein step (v) is (v) applying a vacuum to open ends of the channels of the substrate at the inverted, lower end of the substrate to draw the retained liquid along the channels of the substrate with a vacuum means, wherein the vacuum means comprises a funnel, wherein a wider end of the funnel is for receiving the inverted, lower end of the substrate.
