Abstract

The present invention relates to a silencer for reducing muzzle blast and noise of firearms or similar devices. The present silencer has a hollow cylindrical or other shape casing comprising front and rear end caps and an opening aligned along a longitudinal axis defining a passage for a projectile and propellant gases to emerge from the muzzle opening. A plurality of serially placed baffles of symmetrical or slanted orientation and intervening coaxial spacers are positioned within the casing and define a multitude of chambers among the baffles, spacers, and outer housing. The baffles shear propellant gases away from the projectile path and through openings or ports into additional chambers formed between the spacers and outer housing. The arrangement of baffles and spacers provides flow-impeding paths, dispersion, and controlled expansion of gases and lowers gas temperature to reduce audible noise and observable signature of the muzzle blast.

Claims (34)

1. A silencer comprising:

an outer shell defining an interior space, the interior space includes a first end and a second end and a longitudinal compartment between the first end and the second end, wherein a bullet path extends from the first end to the second end through the longitudinal compartment;

a muzzle interface located at the first end of the outer shell;

an end cap located at the second end of the outer shell;

a monolithic baffle module positioned within the outer shell between the muzzle interface and the end cap, the baffle module including:

a first chamber adjacent a second chamber, each of the first and second chambers being substantially enclosed between at least a first and second pair of opposed walls, a third and fourth pair of opposed walls, and a portion of the interior of the outer shell;

wherein both of the first and second opposed walls include a bullet aperture that is aligned with the bullet path and wherein at least one of the first and second opposed walls is oriented at an angle relative to the bullet path that is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees,

wherein the third and fourth walls of the first chamber and the third and fourth walls of the second chamber are oriented substantially parallel to the bullet path.

2. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein the third wall of the first chamber and the third wall of the second chamber are aligned and abut each other, and wherein the fourth wall of the first chamber and the fourth wall of the second chamber are aligned and abut each other.

3. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second walls include curved periphery edge profiles that are configured to match the curvature of an interior portion of the outer shell.

4. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein the surface that faces the muzzle interface includes surface features thereon.

5. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein the surface that faces the muzzle interface includes surface features thereon, and wherein the surface features include spaced apart ridges that are oriented parallel to each other.

6. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein third walls of the first and second chambers are configured to define a first outer coaxial chamber located between the interior of the outer shell and the third walls.

7. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein third walls of the first and second chambers are configured to define a first coaxial outer chamber located between the interior of the outer shell and the third walls, wherein the first coaxial outer chamber is subdivided into at least two chambers via a wall that extends from the third walls in a radial direction.

8. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein third walls of the first and second chambers are configured to define a first outer coaxial chamber located between the interior of the outer shell and the third walls, wherein an aperture in at least one of the third walls allows air flow from at least one of the first and second chambers to the first outer coaxial chamber.

9. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second chambers are substantially enclosed between at least the first and second pair of opposed walls, the third and fourth pair of opposed walls, a portion of the interior of the outer shell, and a fifth wall that is oriented generally parallel to the bullet path and between the first and second opposed wall and also between the third and fourth pair of opposed walls.

10. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein both of the first and second opposed walls of the first and second chambers are oriented at an angle relative to the bullet axis that is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees.

11. The silencer of claim 10 , wherein the first and second opposed walls of the first and second chambers are generally parallel to each other.

12. The silencer of claim 1 , wherein both of the first and second opposed walls of one of the first and second chambers are oriented at an angle relative to the bullet path that is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees and wherein one of the first and second opposed wall of one of the first and second chambers is orientated at about a 90 degree angle relative to the bullet path.

13. A baffle for a silencer comprising:

an elongated monolithic module including a first end and a second end and a bullet path extending through the module from the first end to the second end;

wherein the module defines at least a first chamber adjacent a second chamber, the first and second chambers being partially enclosed by a first and second pair of opposed walls, a third and fourth pair of opposed walls;

wherein the first and second opposed side walls include a bullet aperture that is aligned with the bullet path and wherein at least one of the first and second opposed side walls is oriented at an angle relative to the bullet path that is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees,

wherein the third and fourth walls of the first chamber and the third and fourth walls of the second chamber are oriented substantially parallel to the bullet path,

wherein the first and second opposed side walls include surface features thereon,

wherein the third walls include at least one aperture that enables air flow from within the first and second chambers on a first side of the third wall to flow to a space located on a second side of the third wall.

14. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein the third wall of the first chamber and the third wall of the second chamber are aligned and abut each other, wherein the fourth wall of the first chamber and fourth wall of the second chamber are aligned and abut each other.

15. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein the first and second walls include curved periphery edge profiles.

16. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the surfaces of each of the first and second walls includes surface features thereon.

17. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the surfaces of each of the first and second walls includes surface features thereon, and wherein the surface features include spaced apart ridges that are oriented parallel to each other.

18. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein third walls of the first and second chamber include a protrusion that extends outwardly in a radial direction.

19. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein the third walls include at least one aperture therein.

20. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein the first and second opposed walls are generally parallel to each other.

21. The baffle of claim 13 , wherein the monolithic baffle module includes two additional chambers that include at least the features of the first and second chamber identified in claim 12 .
