Abstract

An energy-delivery device suitable for delivery of energy to tissue includes an antenna assembly, a chamber defined about the antenna assembly, and a cable having a proximal end suitable for connection to an electrosurgical energy source. The energy-delivery device also includes a flexible, fluid-cooled shaft coupled in fluid communication with the chamber. The flexible, fluid-cooled shaft is configured to contain a length of the cable therein and adapted to remove heat along the length of the cable during delivery of energy to the antenna assembly.

Claims (22)

1. A fluid flow junction removably coupled to a first tubular member defining a fluid inflow conduit and a second tubular member disposed around the first tubular member and defining a fluid outflow conduit therebetween, the fluid flow junction comprising:

a housing configured to fluidly couple to a coolant supply system, the housing including an outer wall and an inner wall;

a fluid inlet chamber cooperatively defined by the outer and inner walls, wherein the inner wall defines an opening having a first diameter in the fluid inlet chamber to fluidly couple the fluid inlet chamber to the fluid inflow conduit;

a fluid outlet chamber cooperatively defined by the outer and inner walls, wherein the outer wall defines an opening in the fluid outlet chamber to fluidly couple the fluid outlet chamber to the fluid outflow conduit, the opening in the fluid outlet chamber having a second diameter larger than the first diameter;

a cable assembly positioned within the fluid inflow conduit, the cable assembly including an inner conductor and an outer conductor coaxially disposed about the inner conductor and separated by a dielectric material; and

a movement restrictor operably coupled to the housing and including a sealing element disposed around the cable assembly, the sealing element configured to impart a compression force on the cable assembly upon movement of the movement restrictor to a first position wherein movement of the cable assembly through the movement restrictor is restricted and to release the compression force on the cable assembly upon movement of the movement restrictor to a second position wherein movement of the cable assembly through the movement restrictor is enabled, the movement restrictor including a rotatable member configured to rotate in a first direction about an axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of the fluid flow junction to move the movement restrictor toward the first position and in a second direction about the axis transverse to the longitudinal axis to move the movement restrictor toward the second position.

2. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , further comprising a cable-entry port defined by an outer surface of the housing, the cable-entry port configured to allow passage of the cable assembly therethrough.

3. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid inlet port defined in the outer wall and disposed in fluid communication with the fluid inlet chamber.

4. The fluid flow junction of claim 3 , wherein the fluid inlet port is a recess defined in the outer wall.

5. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid outlet port defined in the outer wall and disposed in fluid communication with the fluid outlet chamber.

6. The fluid flow junction of claim 5 , wherein the fluid outlet port is a recess defined in the outer wall.

7. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , wherein the housing is further adapted to be sealingly engageable with the first tubular member.

8. The fluid flow junction of claim 7 , wherein the outer wall includes a first engagement portion configured to engage an outer surface of the second tubular member.

9. The fluid flow junction of claim 8 , wherein the first engagement portion includes a protrusion extending outwardly from the outer wall adapted to engage an end portion of the first tubular member.

10. The fluid flow junction of claim 8 , wherein the first engagement portion includes a generally L-shaped bracket coupled to the outer wall adapted to engage an end portion and an inner surface of the first tubular member.

11. The fluid flow junction of claim 7 , wherein the housing is configured to threadingly couple to the first tubular member.

12. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , wherein the housing is further adapted to be sealingly engageable with the second tubular member.

13. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , wherein the inner wall includes a second engagement portion configured to engage an outer surface of the first tubular member.

14. The fluid flow junction of claim 13 , wherein the second engagement portion includes a protrusion extending outwardly from the inner wall adapted to engage an end portion of the second tubular member.

15. The fluid flow junction of claim 14 , wherein the second engagement portion and the second tubular member are sealingly connected by a heat-resistant adhesive.

16. The fluid flow junction of claim 13 , wherein the second engagement portion includes a generally L-shaped bracket coupled to the inner wall adapted to engage an end portion and an inner surface of the second tubular member.

17. The fluid flow junction of claim 1 , wherein the movement restrictor is further configured to restrict movement of the cable assembly relative to the housing.
