Abstract

An energy-delivery device suitable for delivery of energy to tissue includes an antenna assembly, a chamber defined about the antenna assembly, and a cable having a proximal end suitable for connection to an electrosurgical energy source. The energy-delivery device also includes a flexible, fluid-cooled shaft coupled in fluid communication with the chamber. The flexible, fluid-cooled shaft is configured to contain a length of the cable therein and adapted to remove heat along the length of the cable during delivery of energy to the antenna assembly.

Claims (26)

1. An energy-delivery device suitable for delivery of energy to tissue, comprising:

a cable assembly having a proximal end suitable for connection to an electrosurgical energy source and configured to deliver the energy to an antenna assembly, the cable assembly including:

an inner conductor and an outer conductor coaxially disposed about the inner conductor and separated by a dielectric material;

a proximal arm electrically coupled to and coaxially disposed about at least a portion of the outer conductor, the proximal arm defining a first cavity;

an electrically conductive distal arm including a proximal portion defining a second cavity and having an outer diameter and a distal portion having an outer diameter less than the outer diameter of the proximal portion, wherein the first cavity extends from a distal end of the outer conductor to a distal end of the proximal arm; and

a junction member including a proximal portion disposed within the first cavity and a distal portion disposed within the second cavity; and

a flexible, fluid-cooled shaft configured to contain a length of the cable assembly therein and adapted to remove heat along the length of the cable assembly during delivery of the energy to the antenna assembly.

2. The energy-delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal arm and the electrically conductive distal arm align at the junction member, the junction member configured to space apart the proximal arm and the electrically conductive distal arm to define a feed gap therebetween.

3. The energy-delivery device of claim 1 , further comprising an end-cap assembly including a connector portion defining an interior lumen therein, the interior lumen configured to contain at least a portion of the antenna assembly therein.

4. The energy-delivery device of claim 3 , further comprising a fluid chamber defined about the cable assembly.

5. The energy-delivery device of claim 4 , wherein the end-cap assembly includes an end cap coupled to a distal end of the connector portion.

6. The energy-delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the end cap defines an interior chamber configured to contain at least a distal portion of the antenna assembly therein.

7. The energy-delivery device of claim 6 , wherein the interior chamber is disposed in fluid communication with the interior lumen and is configured to circulate coolant fluid about at least the distal portion of the antenna assembly.

8. The energy-delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the end cap defines a proximal chamber portion configured to contain the proximal portion of the electrically conductive distal arm therein.

9. The energy-delivery device of claim 8 , wherein the proximal chamber portion is disposed in fluid communication with the interior lumen and is configured to circulate coolant fluid about the proximal portion of the electrically conductive distal arm.

10. The energy-delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the end cap defines a distal chamber portion therein, the distal chamber portion configured to contain the distal portion of the electrically conductive distal arm therein.

11. The energy-delivery device of claim 10 , wherein the distal chamber portion is configured to circulate coolant fluid about the distal portion of the electrically conductive distal arm.

12. An energy-delivery device suitable for delivery of energy to tissue, comprising:

a cable assembly having a proximal end suitable for connection to an electrosurgical energy source and configured to deliver the energy to an antenna assembly, the cable assembly including:

an inner conductor and an outer conductor coaxially disposed about the inner conductor and separated by a dielectric material;

a proximal arm electrically coupled to and coaxially disposed about at least a portion of the outer conductor, the proximal arm defining a first cavity;

an electrically conductive distal arm including a proximal portion defining a second cavity and having an outer diameter and a distal portion having an outer diameter less than the outer diameter of the proximal portion, wherein the first cavity extends from a distal end of the outer conductor to a distal end of the proximal arm; and

a junction member including a proximal portion disposed within the first cavity and a distal portion disposed within the second cavity; and

a flexible, fluid-cooled shaft configured to contain a length of the cable assembly therein and adapted to circulate coolant fluid therethrough.

13. The energy-delivery device of claim 12 , wherein the flexible, fluid-cooled shaft includes an inner tubular member disposed about the cable assembly to define a fluid inflow conduit between the inner tubular member and the cable assembly, the fluid inflow conduit fluidly coupled to a fluid chamber defined about the cable assembly.

14. The energy-delivery device of claim 13 , wherein the flexible, fluid-cooled shaft further includes an outer tubular member disposed about the inner tubular member to define a fluid outflow conduit between the outer tubular member and the inner tubular member, the fluid outflow conduit fluidly coupled to a fluid chamber defined about the cable assembly.
