Abstract

The implant includes two side walls resting against the vertebral end-plates and an intermediate wall joining the supporting walls. The implant can be deformed for insertion between the vertebrae to be treated to restore the attenuated mobility of the vertebrae, and includes mounting elements mounting on the vertebrae. The side walls have a curved shape, whose convexity is oriented towards the outside of the implant; the intermediate wall has a curved shape, whose convexity is oriented towards the outside of the implant such that it does not form any pronounced angles with the supporting side walls. The supporting side walls and the intermediate wall, have a partially oval shape; and the mounting elements are configured such that the implant can be mounted on the vertebrae.

Claims (19)

1. A method of restoring anatomical intervertebral space between two vertebrae, comprising:

selecting an implant comprising:

a first bearing wall having an outer convex surface and a free end;

a second bearing wall having an outer convex surface and a free end;

an intermediate wall having a curved shape without marked angles, the intermediate wall connecting the first bearing wall to the second bearing wall such that the first and second bearing walls are substantially parallel to one another and are spaced apart from one another; and

a plurality of ribs, the ribs being parallel to one another and protruding from an external face of at least one of the bearing walls near its free end; and

positioning the implant between a first, upper vertebral body and a second, lower vertebral body to restore a disc space between the vertebral bodies, the ribs being secured to an anterior portion of at least one of the vertebral bodies.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including engaging the bone of a vertebral endplate of at least one of the first and second vertebral bodies with the plurality of ribs to secure the implant to at least one of the first and second vertebral bodies.

3. The method of claim 1 , further including engaging at least a portion of a vertebral endplate of each of the first and second vertebral bodies with the plurality of ribs to secure the implant to the first and second vertebral bodies.

4. The method of claim 1 , further including securing the implant to a vertebrae by passing a screw shaft through a hole in the implant and into a vertebral body.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the hole resides on a tab at one of the free ends of the implant.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the tab extends at an angle from the bearing wall.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the steps of selecting and positioning the implant are repeated, such that a plurality of implants are positioned, and the step of securing the implant to a vertebra is performed on at least one of the implants.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vertebral bodies are located within the cervical area of a patient's spine.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second bearing wall is greater in length than the first bearing wall, and is configured to bear against the second, lower vertebral body during placement.

10. The method of claim 1 further including the step of promoting fusion of the first or second vertebral bodies.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of promoting fusion includes securing the implant to at least one of the first and second vertebral bodies.

12. The method of claim 10 , further including the step of placing a bony graft in between the first and second bearing walls.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ribs comprises sharp free ridges.
