Abstract

The disclosed embodiments relate to a system for providing remote tuning and clock synchronization in a network. The system includes a device that receives a signal that includes a plurality of channels, a device that receives a user request indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels, and a filter that filters the received signal and transmits a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels to the user. An alternative embodiment of the system includes a device that receives a signal that includes a plurality of packets, at least a portion of the plurality of packets comprising an embedded time stamp, a device that detects the at least a portion of the plurality of packets containing the embedded time stamp, and a device that computes an adjusted time stamp based on the embedded timestamp and a precision local clock and incorporates the adjusted timestamp into the at least a portion of the plurality of packets containing the embedded timestamp prior to transmitting the at least a portion of the plurality of packets to the network.

Claims (44)

1. A system for remote tuning of a plurality of network set top boxes through a network, comprising:

a head end unit comprising:

a receiver that receives a signal that comprises a plurality of channels, the receiver also receiving a user request over the network from one of the plurality of network set top boxes indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels; and

a filter that filters the received signal and transmits a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels to said one of the plurality of network set top boxes over the network.

2. The system set forth in claim 1 , wherein the network comprises a multi-dwelling unit network.

3. The system set forth in claim 1 , wherein the filter comprises a packet identifier (“PID”) filter.

4. The system set forth in claim 1 , wherein the signal is received from a satellite.

5. A method for performing remote tuning of a plurality of network set top boxes through a network, the method comprising the acts of:

receiving by a receiver in a head end unit a signal that comprises a plurality of channels;

receiving by said receiver a user request from one of the plurality of network set top boxes indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels;

filtering by said head end unit the received signal to obtain a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels; and

transmitting by said head end unit the user signal to the one of the plurality of network set top boxes via the network.

6. The method set forth in claim 5 , comprising employing a packet identifier (“PID”) filter to produce the user signal.

7. The method set forth in claim 5 , wherein the network comprises a multi-dwelling network.

8. The method set forth in claim 5 , wherein the signal is received from a satellite.

9. A system for remote tuning by a plurality of network set top boxes through a network, comprising:

a video server comprising:

a receiver that receives a signal that comprises a plurality of channels, the receiver also receiving a user request over the network from one of the plurality of network set top boxes indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels; and

a filter that filters the received signal and transmits a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels to said one of the plurality of network set top boxes over the network.

10. The system set forth in claim 9 , wherein the network comprises a multi-dwelling unit network.

11. The system set forth in claim 9 , wherein the filter comprises a packet identifier (“PID”) filter.

12. The system set forth in claim 9 , wherein the signal is received from a satellite.

13. An apparatus that is remotely tuned by a plurality of network set top boxes through a network, comprising

a receiver that receives a signal that comprises a plurality of channels, the receiver also receiving a user request over the network from one of the plurality of network set top boxes indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels; and

a filter that filters the received signal and transmits a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels to said one of the plurality of network set top boxes over the network.

14. The apparatus set forth in claim 13 , wherein the network comprises a multi-dwelling unit network.

15. The apparatus set forth in claim 13 , wherein the filter comprises a packet identifier (“PID”) filter.

16. The apparatus set forth in claim 13 , wherein the signal is received from a satellite.

17. A method for performing remote tuning by a plurality of network set top boxes through a network, the method comprising the acts of:

receiving by a receiver in a video server a signal that comprises a plurality of channels;

receiving by said receiver a user request from one of the plurality of network set top boxes indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels;

filtering by said video server the received signal to obtain a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels; and

transmitting by said video server the user signal to the one of the plurality of network set top boxes via the network.

18. The method set forth in claim 17 , comprising employing a packet identifier (“PID”) filter to produce the user signal.

19. The method set forth in claim 17 , wherein the network comprises a multi-dwelling network.

20. The method set forth in claim 17 , wherein the signal is received from a satellite.

21. A method for performing remote tuning by a plurality of network set top boxes through a network, the method comprising the acts of:

receiving by a receiving circuit a signal that comprises a plurality of channels;

receiving by said receiving circuit a user request from one of the plurality of network set top boxes indicative of a desire to view at least one of the plurality of channels;

filtering by a filtering circuit the received signal to obtain a user signal corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of channels; and

transmitting by a transmitting circuit the user signal to the one of the plurality of network set top boxes via the network.

22. The method set forth in claim 21 , comprising employing a packet identifier (“PID”) filter to produce the user signal.

23. The method set forth in claim 21 , wherein the network comprises a multi-dwelling network.

24. The method set forth in claim 21 , wherein the signal is received from a satellite.
