Stent with expandable foam
View Patent ↗A stent for treating a physical anomaly. The stent includes a skeletal support structure for expanding in the physical anomaly and a shape memory material coupled to the skeletal support structure.
1. A device comprising: a vascular stent, to be implanted in a patient, including first and second windows along a central lumen of the stent, the first and second windows respectively including first and second shape memory polymer struts that each include shape memory polymer having a first state and a second state;
a shape memory polymer, coupled to the first and second shape memory polymer struts, having a first state and a second state;
a core, included in the central lumen of the stent, to provide structural support to the first and second shape memory polymer struts during advancement of the stent within vasculature of the patient; and
a heating system included in the core;
wherein (a) in a first position the vascular stent is to be located, with the first and second shape memory polymer struts in the first state and the shape memory polymer in the first state, proximate to a vascular aneurysm; (b) in a second position the shape memory polymer is to be expanded to the second state, radially outward from the first and second shape memory polymer struts and into the vascular aneurysm, based on heat from the heating system; and (c) in a third position the first and second shape memory polymer struts are to be expanded to the second state, proximate to the vascular aneurysm, based on heat from the heating system;
wherein the core, included in the central lumen of the stent, is configured to at least partially prevent the shape memory polymer from expanding radially inward from the first and second shape memory polymer struts and completely blocking the central lumen once the stent is implanted in the patient.

wherein the first shape memory polymer strut is doped with a dye having a first energy absorption coefficient and the shape memory polymer is doped with a dye having a second energy absorption coefficient unequal to the first absorption coefficient.
