Abstract

A system, method and computer-readable medium that previews words and commands recognized by a continuous stroke recognizer based on input into a virtual keyboard layout is presented. The system and method allows a user to see the word that will be recognized or output before the user commits the continuous stroke input to the system. Further, after recognition and output, the system presents the recognized output word and the closest word candidates in a correction display integrated with the virtual keyboard layout. Among other things, the user is provided with options to change the current output word by selecting another word candidate on the correction display, and to delete the current output word by selecting the representation of the current output word on the correction display.

Claims (82)

1. A method for use in a continuous stroke system having a virtual keyboard with an integrated correction display, comprising:

receiving a portion of a first part of a continuous stroke which has been input into a virtual keyboard,

wherein the first part of the continuous stroke corresponds to locations, on the virtual keyboard, of multiple letters of the beginning of a word in sequence, without indicating a last letter of the word;

wherein the continuous stroke is entered by a user through continuous contact with a display, the continuous contact corresponding to multiple keys on the virtual keyboard, and

wherein the portion of the first part of the continuous stroke corresponds to one or more initial letters that comprise less than all the letters of the word;

determining, while the first part of the continuous stroke is being received and before the last letter corresponding to the first part of the continuous stroke has been indicated, a matching set of word patterns that at least partially match the first part of the continuous stroke,

wherein the determining is performed, at least in part, by comparing the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke with an initial portion of multiple known word patterns which correspond to multiple known words;

generating, from the matching set of word patterns, multiple known words which correspond to the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke;

in response to a trigger event, displaying at least one of the multiple known words on the integrated correction display, integrated with the virtual keyboard, before the continuous stroke has been completed,

wherein the trigger event is based on a comparison between speed information concerning a current rate of movement of the continuous stroke and a threshold speed value;

updating the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke with a second part of the continuous stroke which has been input into the virtual keyboard before the last letter corresponding to the first part of the continuous stroke has been indicated,

wherein the second part of the continuous stroke extends the continuous stroke to intersect with one of the multiple known words displayed on the integrated correction display; and

selecting, based on the extension of the continuous stroke, the one of the multiple known words with which the updated continuous stroke intersects.

2. The method of claim 1 :

wherein the continuous stroke system is associated with an active application; and

wherein the method further comprises outputting to the associated active application the selected one of the multiple known words.

3. The method of claim 1 :

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

adding to the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke a received second portion of the first part of the continuous stroke which has been input into the virtual keyboard; and

prior to updating the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke with the second part of the continuous stroke:

updating, before the last letter corresponding to the continuous stroke has been indicated, the matching set of word patterns that at least partially match the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke and the received second portion of the first part of the continuous stroke;

generating, from the updated matching set of word patterns, one or more substitute known words which correspond to the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke and the received second portion of the first part of the continuous stroke; and

updating, before the continuous stroke has been completed, the integrated correction display with the substitute known words, wherein the updating the integrated correction display with the substitute known words is based on a second comparison between additional speed information concerning a second current rate of movement of the continuous stroke and the threshold speed value.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for use in a continuous stroke system having a virtual keyboard with an integrated correction display, comprising:

instructions for receiving a portion of a first part of a continuous stroke which has been input into a virtual keyboard,

wherein the first part of the continuous stroke corresponds to locations, on the virtual keyboard, of multiple letters of the beginning of a word in sequence, without indicating a last letter of the word; and

wherein the portion of the first part of the continuous stroke corresponds to one or more initial letters that comprise less than all the letters of the word;

instructions for determining, while the first part of the continuous stroke is being received and before the last letter corresponding to the first part of the continuous stroke has been indicated, a matching set of word patterns that at least partially match the first part of the continuous stroke,

wherein the determining is performed, at least in part, by comparing the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke with an initial portion of multiple known word patterns which correspond to multiple known words;

instructions for generating, from the matching set of word patterns, multiple known words which correspond to the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke;

instructions for displaying, in response to a trigger event, at least one of the multiple known words on the integrated correction display, integrated with the virtual keyboard, before the continuous stroke has been completed,

wherein the trigger event is based on a comparison between speed information concerning a current rate of movement of the continuous stroke and a threshold speed value; and

instructions for updating the received portion of the first part of the continuous stroke with a second part of the continuous stroke which has been input into the virtual keyboard before the last letter corresponding to the first part of the continuous stroke has been indicated.
