Abstract

A data distribution system and method are described herein to improve the distribution of market information to subscribing client devices. Market information updates are provided to subscribing devices over a communication link every time a change in the market occurs. If a bandwidth limitation is reached on the communication link, the preferred embodiments switch to a second mode of transmission such that the market information updates are provided only at predetermined intervals. The preferred embodiment monitors the bandwidth consumption to determine what mode of transmission to apply, and in response, it can dynamically change between modes of transmission. By dynamically adjusting the mode of transmission to comport with the current network bandwidth, the preferred embodiments may provide a network friendly, data intensive, and fast response market information feed.

Claims (17)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium having code stored therein that when executed by a processor cause the processor to carry out acts comprising:

distributing market information from an electronic exchange via a communication link according to a selected a mode of communication being dynamically selected between a plurality of modes of transmission for a communication link according to a determined bandwidth usage for the communication link, where at least one mode of transmission includes transmitting new market information snapshots for bid orders and ask orders for the tradeable object, and a second mode of transmission includes sending market update messages including data retrieved from a data structure having consolidated market data corresponding to the tradeable object.

2. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where the communication link comprises a network connection.

3. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 2 where the network connection comprises an electronic market information source.

4. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where the first mode of transmission is selected according to high bandwidth usage and the second mode of transmission is selected according to lower bandwidth usage.

5. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , where the acts further comprise measuring bandwidth usage, where the selected mode or communication is selected according to the measured bandwidth usage.

6. A system for distributing of market information, comprising:

a processor configured to transmit market information according to a plurality of modes of communication, wherein a selected mode of communication is dynamically selected according to bandwidth usage of the communication link, where at least one selected mode of communication includes transmitting market snapshots including a highest bid price for a tradeable object and a lowest ask price for the tradeable object, and a second selected mode of communication includes transmitting market update messages including data retrieved from a data structure having consolidated market data corresponding to the tradeable object.

7. The system of claim 6 where the selected mode of communication of the plurality of modes of communication is selected according to a bandwidth usage monitor.

8. A system for distribution of market information, comprising:

an electronic processor being configured to dynamically select between a plurality of modes of communication of market information according to bandwidth usage for a communication link for the market information, where at least one mode of communication includes transmitting market messages including a highest bid price for a tradeable object and a lowest ask price for the tradeable object, and a second mode of communication includes transmitting new market update information snapshots having a best bid price and a best ask price.

9. The system of claim 8 where the first mode is selected according to the bandwidth usage being below a first bandwidth limit.

10. The system of claim 9 where the second mode of transmission is selected according to the bandwidth usage being above a second bandwidth limit.

11. The system of claim 10 where the first bandwidth and the second bandwidth are determined according to a bandwidth limit monitor.

12. The system of claim 10 where the first bandwidth limit is substantially the same as the second bandwidth limit.

13. The system of claim 10 where the first bandwidth limit and the second bandwidth limit are dynamically adjustable.

14. The system of claim 10 where the first bandwidth limit and the second bandwidth limit are manually set.
