Energy delivery systems and uses thereof
The present invention relates to comprehensive systems, devices and methods for delivering energy to tissue for a wide variety of applications, including medical procedures (e.g., tissue ablation, resection, cautery, vascular thrombosis, treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and dysrhythmias, electrosurgery, tissue harvest, etc.). In certain embodiments, systems, devices, and methods are provided for treating a tissue region (e.g., a tumor) through application of energy.
1. A method for energy delivery by an ablative energy delivery medical device, comprising:
a) providing an ablative energy delivery system, wherein the ablative energy delivery system comprises the ablative energy delivery medical device connected to a power source by a cable having a power rating, wherein said power rating establishes a maximum amount of energy that should be delivered through said cable; and
b) cooling the ablative energy delivery medical device while delivering the energy above the power rating.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said cooling is provided by a carbon dioxide gas coolant.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said carbon dioxide gas coolant is at or near its critical point.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the energy above the cable power rating is delivered at 5-20 times the cable power rating.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said energy is microwave energy.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising cooling the cable of said ablative energy delivery system and the ablative energy delivery medical device while delivering the energy above the power rating.
