Abstract

An arterio-venous graft ( 16 ) is provided with a constriction device ( 20 ) near its arterial end. The constriction device ( 20 ) is used to reduce the flow through the AV graft under normal conditions and to relieve the constriction when high flow through the AV graft is required, such as for vascular access for hemodialysis.

Claims (30)

1. A device for controlling fluid flow in a vessel that is part of a digestive tract of a human, the device comprising:

a constriction applicator having a first member and a second member in relative positions and spaced apart by a gap that is sized to receive the vessel, wherein the second member is configured to be moved relative to the first member to change a size of the gap and thereby alter the amount of pressure against the vessel to thereby control the fluid flow in the vessel; and

a control portion that includes

(1 ) a locking system constructed to lock the position of the second member relative to the first member, and

(2 ) a release mechanism to release the locking system, wherein the release mechanism is constructed to displace the locking system away from the second member to release the locking system.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the first and second members are connected to each other.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the constriction applicator is in the form of a clip.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the second member is adapted to be moved in a direction substantially perpendicular to the fluid flow in the vessel.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein the locking system includes a series of grooves or notches.

6. The device of claim 1 further comprising a pressing device to move the second member relative to the first member.

7. The device of claim 6 wherein the pressing device operates the second member without contacting the constriction applicator.

8. The device of claim 6 wherein the pressing device includes a sensor that detects motion at the control portion.

9. The device of claim 1 wherein the constriction applicator is manufactured from a biocompatible plastic.

10. The device of claim 1 wherein further comprising a plurality of constriction applicators.

11. The device of claim 10 wherein the plurality of constriction applicators are arranged to constrict the vessel along an elongate portion thereof.

12. The device of claim 11 wherein the plurality of constriction applicators control a profile of the constricted vessel along its length.

13. The device of claim 1 in combination with an implantable vessel graft.

14. A method of fluid flow control in a vessel in a digestive tract of a human, the method comprising:

providing an implantable device comprising a constriction applicator having a first member and a second member in relative positions and spaced apart by a gap that is sized to receive the vessel, wherein the second member is configured to be moved relative to the first member to change a size of the gap and thereby alter the amount of pressure against the vessel to thereby control the fluid flow in the vessel; and

a control portion that includes

(1 ) a locking system constructed to lock the position of the second member relative to the first member, and

(2 ) a release mechanism to release the locking system, wherein the release mechanism is constructed to displace the locking system away from the second member to release the locking system;

implanting the implantable device so that the constriction applicator engages the vessel in the gap; and

from external a body of the human, selectively (1 ) operating system to lock the position of the second member relative to the first member to apply pressure on the vessel, and (2 ) operating the release mechanism to release the locking system to reduce pressure on the vessel by displacing the locking system away from the second member.

15. A method according to claim 14 wherein the applicator is configured to apply pressure over an elongate portion of the vessel.

16. A method according to claim 14 wherein the applicator is configured to apply pressure at a plurality of positions along the vessel.

17. A method according to claim 14 wherein the vessel in the digestive tract is connected to a stomach of the human.

18. A method according to claim 14 further comprising sensing the motion of one portion of the constriction applicator relative to another portion.

19. A method according to claim 14 further comprising sensing to determine an optimum level of applied pressure.

20. A method according to claim 14 further comprising sensing to determine an optimum level of constriction of the vessel within the applicator.
