Abstract

A chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system comprises an optical pulse stretcher and an optical pulse compressor that are mismatched in that the optical pulse compressor includes a bulk optical grating while the optical pulse stretcher does not. High order dispersion compensation is provided by an optical phase mask disposed within the optical pulse compressor.

Claims (14)

1. A system comprising:

an optical amplifier configured to optically amplify a chirped optical pulse; and

an optical pulse compressor configured to compress the optically amplified chirped optical pulse, the optical pulse compressor including

a bulk optical grating configured to spatially disperse the optically amplified chirped optical pulse into a spatially dispersed optical pulse and direct the spatially dispersed optical pulse in a first direction along a first path, and

an optical phase mask configured to perform dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse by adjusting an optical phase; and

an optical pulse stretcher coupled to the optical amplifier and configured to output a chirped optical pulse to the optical amplifier.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical pulse stretcher is configured to chirp a received optical pulse and output the chirped optical pulse to the optical amplifier.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical pulse stretcher comprises an optical fiber.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask performs a fourth order dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask is configured to perform a fifth order dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask is incorporated into a glass substrate.

7. The system of claim 1 further comprising a mirror, wherein the optical phase mask is integral with a surface of the mirror.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask comprises a deformable mirror.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising a mirror configured to redirect the spatially dispersed optical pulse toward the bulk optical grating in a second direction along a second path, the second direction being approximately opposite the first direction, and the second path being offset from the first path and being substantially perpendicular to both the first and second directions.
