Abstract

The invention pertains to techniques or processes for managing surgical smoke. In one embodiment a suction apparatus evacuates the surgical smoke. For example, the suction apparatus may be arranged adjacent to an electrocautery electrode, which may generate smoke during operation, for evacuating smoke from a surgical site.

Claims (38)

1. An extendable suction attachment for one handed operation with an electrosurgical pencil having an electrocautery electrode, a handpiece, and at least one switch for activating the electrocautery electrode, the extendable suction attachment comprising:

an extendable suction tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end, the lumen arranged to receive the electrocautery electrode of the electrosurgical pencil into the lumen via the proximal end;

an attachment housing supportively coupled with the proximal end of the extendable suction tube;

an extension control slideably coupled with the attachment housing and coupled with the extendable suction tube for controlling extendable movement of the distal end of the extendable suction tube over the electrocautery electrode; and

an engagement member for releasably securing the extendable suction attachment to the electrosurgical pencil.

2. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 wherein:

the switch comprises a finger switch disposed on an outer surface of the handpiece of the electrosurgical pencil; and

the extension control comprises a thumb control arranged for one handed operation of the extendable suction attachment with the finger switch of the electrosurgical pencil.

3. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 wherein the engagement member is alternatively arrangeable with the electrosurgical pencil for ambidextrous one handed operation of the thumb control and the finger switch.

4. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 wherein the extendable suction attachment is separable from the electrosurgical pencil.

5. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 wherein the extendable suction attachment is disposable.

An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 further comprising at least one suction control port extending through the extension control or through a wall of the attachment housing, and fluidly coupled with the proximate end of the extendable suction tube for controlling suction at the distal end of the extendable suction tube.

An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 wherein the extension control comprises a thumb control slideably coupled with the attachment housing, and further comprising a first suction control port disposed at a location extending through the thumb control, and substantially sized for variable sealing of the first suction control port by an operator's thumb in one handed operation of the extended suction attachment with the electrosurgical pencil.

An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 7 further comprising a second suction control port extending through a wall of the attachment housing, wherein the second suction control port is fluidly coupled with the proximate end of the extendable suction tube for controlling suction at the distal end of the extendable suction tube and is arranged at a location adjacent to the location of the first suction control port.

9. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing for limiting movement of the extendable suction tube to a preselected full extent of the distal end covering the electrocautery electrode.

An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 8 further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing for limiting movement of the extendable suction tube to a preselected full extent of the distal end covering the electrocautery electrode, wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial alignment when the thumb control slideably coupled with the attachment housing controls the movement of the extendable suction tube to the preselected full extent of the distal end covering the electrocautery electrode.

11. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing for limiting one of:

movement of the extendable suction tube to a preselected full extent of the distal end covering the electrocautery electrode, and

movement of the extendable suction tube to a preselected retraction extent of the distal end of the extendable suction tube, so as to expose the electrocautery electrode outside of the lumen of the extendable suction tube.

12. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

a first movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing for limiting movement of the extendable suction tube to a preselected full extent of the distal end covering the electrocautery electrode; and

an opposing movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing for limiting movement of the extendable suction tube to a preselected retraction extent of the distal end of the extendable suction tube, so as to expose the electrocautery electrode outside of the lumen of the extendable suction tube.

13. An extendable suction attachment as recited in claim 1 wherein the engagement member comprises at least one of an o-ring, foam, adhesive tape and a thermoelastic polymer gasket.

14. A suction apparatus adapted to receive and releasably secure an electrosurgical pencil having an electrocautery electrode comprising:

an extendable suction tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal end, the lumen arranged to receive the electrocautery electrode of the electrosurgical pencil into the lumen via the proximal end;

an attachment housing to releasably receive the electrosurgical pencil and supportively coupled with the proximal end of the extendable suction tube;

an extension control slideably coupled with the attachment housing and coupled with the extendable suction tube for controlling extendable movement of the distal end of the extendable suction tube over the electrocautery electrode; and

an engagement member for releasably securing the suction apparatus to the electrosurgical pencil.

15. A suction apparatus as recited in claim 14 wherein the suction apparatus is separable from the electrosurgical pencil.

16. A suction apparatus as recited in claim 14 wherein the suction apparatus is disposable.

17. A method for using an electrosurgical pencil having an electrocautery electrode comprising:

receiving the electrocautery electrode within a proximal end of a lumen of an extendable suction tube of an extendable suction attachment, the extendable suction tube supportively coupled with an attachment housing of the extendable suction attachment;

releasably securing the extendable suction attachment to the electrosurgical pencil;

electrically activating the electrocautery electrode; and

moveably extending the extendable suction tube of the extendable suction attachment using an extension control slideably coupled with the attachment housing of extendable suction attachment.

18. A method as recited in claim 17 further comprising separating the extendable suction attachment from the electrosurgical pencil.

19. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein the extendable suction attachment is disposable and further comprising disposing of the extendable suction attachment.

20. A method as recited in claim 17 further comprising one handed operation of the extendable suction attachment with the electrosurgical pencil.
