Abstract

A reaction tank useful for precipitating struvite from aqueous solutions such as wastewater comprises an aeration system. The aeration system includes air diffusers in the reaction tank. The air diffusers are located at a level below an outlet of the reaction tank. The airflow control mechanism comprises means for automatically controlling the flow of the stripping gas from the diffusers. The airflow control mechanism may be configured to automatically control the flow of stripping gas in response to a signal from a sensor measuring the pH of the aqueous solution the alkalinity of the aqueous solution or the concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide in the aqueous solution.

Claims (33)

1 . A treatment system for use in removing solutes from aqueous solutions, the reactor comprising:

a reaction tank;

an inlet for an aqueous solution to enter the reaction tank;

an outlet in an upper portion of the reaction tank; and

an aeration system in the reaction tank below the outlet, said aeration system comprising one or more air diffusers operable to diffuse a stripping gas into the reaction tank and an airflow control mechanism configured to control a flow of the stripping gas through the diffusers.

2 . A treatment system according to claim 1 , further comprising a recycling path for removing aqueous solution from the reaction tank and returning at least part of the removed aqueous solution to the reaction tank.

3 . A treatment system according to claim 2 , wherein the recycling path extends from the outlet of the reaction tank to the inlet of the reaction tank.

4 . A treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the air diffusers comprise one or both of flexible membrane diffusers or coarse bubble membrane diffusers.

5 . A treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the stripping gas is selected from the group consisting of air, an inert gas, nitrogen and combinations thereof.

6 . A treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the airflow control mechanism comprises means for automatically controlling the flow of the stripping gas from the diffusers.

7 . A treatment system according to claim 6 , wherein the airflow control mechanism is configured to automatically control the flow of stripping gas in response to a signal from a sensor measuring the pH of the aqueous solution the alkalinity of the aqueous solution or the concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide in the aqueous solution.

8 . A treatment system according to claim 6 , wherein the airflow control mechanism is configured to automatically control the flow of stripping gas in response to a signal from a sensor measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide in a headspace of the reaction tank.

9 . A treatment system according to claim 7 , wherein the airflow control mechanism is configured to increase the flow of stripping gas in response to one or more of a decrease in pH an increase in alkalinity or an increase in the concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide.

10 . A treatment system according to claim 1 wherein the reaction tank comprises a baffle separating a main body of the reaction tank from an outlet portion of the reaction tank and at least some of the diffusers are located in a part of the reaction tank separated from the outlet portion by the baffle.

11 . A treatment system according to claim 10 comprising an independent control system operable to operate additional diffusers present in the outlet portion of the reaction tank.

12 . A treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to maintain the aqueous solution pH between 7.0 and 8.5.

13 . A treatment system according to claim 1 , wherein the aeration system is operable to break up accumulations of floatable solids on the top of the reaction tank.

14 . A treatment system according to claim 1 wherein the air diffusers are located 50 to 200 cm below a fill level of the reaction tank.

15 . A method for treating an aqueous solution, the method comprising:

introducing the aqueous solution into a reaction tank;

providing one or more air diffusers in the reaction tank below an outlet of the reaction tank, said air diffusers capable of diffusing a stripping gas into the aqueous solution;

controlling a flow of the stripping gas from the diffusers to the tank to decrease a concentration of carbon dioxide in the aqueous solution or to increase the pH of the aqueous solution to a level that favours the formation of struvite in the reaction tank; and

extracting struvite pellets formed in the reaction tank.

16 . A method according to claim 15 , comprising controlling the flow of the stripping gas to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the aqueous solution by 10% or more.

17 . A method according to claim 15 , comprising controlling the flow of the stripping gas to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the aqueous solution by 50% or more.

18 . A method according to claim 15 , comprising controlling the flow of the stripping gas to increase the pH of the aqueous solution in the reaction tank by 0.1 pH unit or more.

19 . A method according to claim 18 , comprising controlling the flow of the stripping gas to increase the pH of the aqueous solution in the reaction tank by 0.5 pH unit or more.

20 . A method according to claim 15 , comprising maintaining the pH of the aqueous solution between 7.0 and 8.5.

21 . A method according to claim 15 , wherein the stripping gas is selected from the group consisting of air, an inert gas, nitrogen and combinations thereof.

22 . A method according to claim 15 , comprising controlling the flow of stripping gas to break up an accumulation of floatable solids on the top of the reaction tank.

23 . A method according to claim 15 wherein the aqueous solution comprises wastewater.

24 . A method according to claim 15 wherein the reaction tank comprises a baffle separating a main body of the reaction tank from an outlet portion of the reaction tank, the diffusers include diffusers within the outlet portion of the reaction tank and the method comprises controlling the diffusers within the outlet portion of the reaction tank independently of other ones of the diffusers.

25 . A method according to claim 24 comprising operating the diffusers within the outlet portion of the reaction tank to break up accumulated floating solids and operating the other ones of the diffusers to control one or both of pH and CO 2 content of the aqueous solution.
