Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for comparing annotations in files to show changes in the annotations at a granular level. In one implementation, a system receives a first file and a second file for comparison. The system determines the annotation ranges for each annotation in the first file and the annotation range for each annotation in the second file. The system then determines the annotations from the first file that overlap with annotations from the second file and compares annotations that overlap. The system then incorporates the comparison of the annotations into a main comparison file. In certain implementations, the system uses an index to determine what annotations overlap. In other implementations, matched pairs are created from overlapping annotations.

Claims (70)

1. A computer-based file comparison system for comparing annotations within files comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions to direct the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first file and a second file for comparison,

determining a first annotation range for a first annotation in the first file,

determining a second annotation range for a second annotation in the second file,

determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range overlap, and

comparing the first annotation and the second annotation to create an annotation comparison output that includes compared annotation text representing differences between text in the first annotation and text in the second annotation.

2. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

creating a matched pair of the first annotation and the second annotation using the first annotation range and the second annotation range.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the matched pair is created by annotations with the most data in common between the first annotation range and the second annotation range.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein creating the matched pair includes determining that the overlap between the first annotation range and the second annotation range is larger than an overlap associated with at least one other annotation range.

5. The system of claim 1 , the operations further comprising:

comparing the first file and the second file to create a file comparison output; and

incorporating the annotation comparison output into the file comparison output.

6. The system of claim 5 , the operations further comprising:

determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range do not overlap; and

providing an indication in the file comparison output that the first annotation has been removed.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range overlap includes correlating an index for the first file with an index for the second file.

8. A computer-implemented method for comparing annotations within files comprising:

receiving a first file and a second file for comparison;

determining a first annotation range for a first annotation in the first file;

determining a second annotation range for a second annotation in the second file;

determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range overlap; and

comparing the first annotation and the second annotation to create an annotation comparison output that includes compared annotation text representing differences between text in the first annotation and text in the second annotation.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

creating a matched pair of the first annotation and the second annotation using the first annotation range and the second annotation range.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the matched pair is created by annotations with the most data in common between the first annotation range and the second annotation range.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein creating the matched pair includes determining that the overlap between the first annotation range and the second annotation range is larger than an overlap associated with at least one other annotation range.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

comparing the first file and the second file to create a file comparison output; and

incorporating the annotation comparison output into the file comparison output.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range do not overlap; and

providing an indication in the file comparison output that the first annotation has been removed.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range overlap includes correlating a data index for the first file with a data index for the second file.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions for comparing annotations within files, the instructions causing one or more computer processors to perform operations, comprising:

receiving a first file and a second file for comparison;

determining a first annotation range for a first annotation in the first file;

determining a second annotation range for a second annotation in the second file;

determining that the first annotation range and the second annotation range overlap; and

comparing the first annotation and the second annotation to create an annotation comparison output that includes compared annotation text representing differences between text in the first annotation and text in the second annotation.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions for comparing annotations within files, the instructions causing one or more computer processors to perform operations, comprising:

receiving a first file and a second file for comparison;

determining data associated with a first annotation in the first file;

determining data associated with a second annotation in the second file;

determining that at least some of the data associated with the first annotation corresponds with at least some of the data associated with the second annotation, and

comparing the first annotation and the second annotation to create an annotation comparison output that includes compared annotation text representing differences between text in the first annotation and text in the second annotation.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein determining data associated with a first annotation and a second annotation includes creating a first annotation range for the first file and a second annotation range for the second file.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , the operations further comprising:

comparing the first file and the second file to create a file comparison output; and

incorporating the annotation comparison output into the file comparison output.

19. A computer-implemented method for comparing annotations within files comprising:

receiving a first file and a second file for comparison;

determining data associated with a first annotation in the first file;

determining data associated with a second annotation in the second file;

determining that at least some of the data associated with the first annotation corresponds with at least some of the data associated with the second annotation, and

comparing the first annotation and the second annotation to create an annotation comparison output that includes compared annotation text representing differences between text in the first annotation and text in the second annotation.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein determining data associated with a first annotation and a second annotation includes creating a first annotation range for the first file and a second annotation range for the second file.

21. The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

comparing the first file and the second file to create a file comparison output; and

incorporating the annotation comparison output into the file comparison output.

22. A computer-based file comparison system for comparing annotations within files comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions to direct the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first file and a second file for comparison,

determining data associated with a first annotation in the first file,

determining data associated with a second annotation in the second file,

determining that at least some of the data associated with the first annotation corresponds with at least some of the data associated with the second annotation, and

comparing the first annotation and the second annotation to create an annotation comparison output that includes compared annotation text representing differences between text in the first annotation and text in the second annotation.
