Abstract

Aspects of a method and system for beamforming a broadband signal through a multiport network are provided. In this regard, a plurality of signals received via a plurality of antennas may be detected and a plurality of transmit signals may be generated, wherein a phase of at least one of the plurality of transmit signals is responsive to at least one of the detected phases of the received signals. Each of the generated plurality of transmit signals may be separately amplified to generate a plurality of amplified signals. A plurality of the amplified signals may be input to a plurality of first ports of a multi-port network, wherein at least one second port of the multi-port network may be responsive to signals input to at least two of the plurality of first ports.

Claims (38)

1. A method, comprising:

detecting a phase of each of a plurality of signals received via a plurality of antennas,

generating a plurality of transmit signals, wherein a phase of at least one of said plurality of transmit signals is determined based on at least one of said detected phases of said received signals;

separately amplifying each of said generated plurality of transmit signals to generate a plurality of amplified signals; and

inputting a plurality of amplified signals to a plurality of first ports of a multi-port network, wherein at least one of a plurality of second ports of said multi-port network is determined based on signals input to at least two of said plurality of first ports.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said plurality of transmit signals correspond to one or more spatial streams.

3. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising:

weighting each of said one or more spatial streams corresponding to said plurality of transmit signals utilizing a different weight.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said receive signals pass through said multi-port network.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein detecting said phase of each of said plurality of signals is based on signals at one or more coaxial switches.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said plurality of amplified signals passes through at least one coaxial switch before being input to said multi-port network.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein one or more directional couplers are located between one of said plurality of antennas and one or more corresponding transmit/receive (T/R) switches in one or more corresponding paths.

8. The method according to claim 7 , further comprising:

measuring a phase and/or an amplitude of each of said plurality of amplified signals based on corresponding signals from said one or more directional couplers.

9. The method according to claim 7 , further comprising:

measuring an amplitude and/or phase of said receive signals utilizing one or more calibration signals that are applied to one or more of said plurality of directional couplers.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said multiport network is a quadrature hybrid.

11. A system, comprising:

one or more circuits for use in a communication device, said one or more circuits being configured to:

detect a phase of each of a plurality of signals received via a plurality of antennas,

generate a plurality of transmit signals, wherein a phase of at least one of said plurality of transmit signals is determined based on at least one of said detected phases of said received signals;

separately amplify each of said generated plurality of transmit signals to generate a plurality of amplified signals; and

input a plurality of amplified signals to a plurality of first ports of a multi-port network, wherein at least one of a plurality of second ports of said multi-port network is determined based on signals input to at least two of said plurality of first ports.

12. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said plurality of transmit signals correspond to one or more spatial streams.

13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein said one or more circuits are configured to weight each of one or more spatial streams corresponding to said transmit signals utilizing a different weight.

14. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said receive signals pass through said multi-port network.

15. The system according to claim 11 , wherein:

said one or more circuits comprise one or more coaxial switches; and

said one or more circuits are further configured to detect said phase of each of said plurality of signals based on signals at said one or more coaxial switches.

16. The system according to claim 11 , wherein:

said one or more circuits comprise one or more coaxial switches; and

at least one of said plurality of amplified signals passes through said one or more coaxial switches before being input to said multi-port network.

17. The system according to claim 11 , wherein:

said one or more circuits comprise one or more directional couplers and one or more corresponding transmit/receive (T/R) switches; and

said one or more directional couplers are located between one of said plurality of antennas and one or more corresponding transmit/receive (T/R) switches in one or more corresponding paths.

18. The system according to claim 17 , wherein said one or more circuits are configured to measure a phase and/or an amplitude of each of said plurality of amplified signals based on corresponding signals from said one or more directional couplers.

19. The system according to claim 17 , wherein said one or more circuits are configured to measure an amplitude and/or phase of said receive signals utilizing one or more calibration signals that are applied to one or more of said plurality of directional couplers.

20. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said multiport network is a quadrature hybrid.
