Abstract

Disclosed is an optimized process and apparatus for more efficiently and economically carrying out the liquid-phase oxidation of an oxidizable compound. Such liquid-phase oxidation is carried out in a bubble column reactor that provides for a highly efficient reaction at relatively low temperatures. When the oxidized compound is para-xylene and the product from the oxidation reaction is crude terephthalic acid (CTA), such CTA product can be purified and separated by more economical techniques than could be employed if the CTA were formed by a conventional high-temperature oxidation process.

Claims (15)

1. A bubble column reactor for reacting a predominately liquid-phase stream and a predominately gas-phase stream, said reactor comprising:

a vessel shell defining an elongated reaction zone extending along a normally-upright central shell axis, wherein said reaction zone has a normally-lower end and a normally-upper end spaced from one another by a maximum distance (L), wherein said reaction zone has a maximum diameter (D), wherein said reaction zone has an L:D ratio of at least about 3:1;

one or more gas openings for discharging said gas-phase stream into said reaction zone, wherein at least one of said gas openings is located within about 0.25D of said normally-lower end; and

one or more liquid openings for introducing said liquid-phase stream into said reaction zone, wherein at least about 30 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is attributable to liquid openings spaced from the gas opening located closest to said normally-lower end by an axial distance less than about 1.5D.

2. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein at least about 50 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is attributable to liquid openings spaced from the gas opening located closest to said normally-lower end by an axial distance less than about 2.5D.

3. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein at least about 75 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is attributable to liquid openings spaced from the gas opening located closest to said normally-lower end by an axial distance less than about 5D.

4. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein said reactor comprises at least two liquid openings spaced from one another by at least about 0.5D.

5. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein said reactor comprises at least two liquid openings spaced from one another by at least about 1.5D.

6. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein when said reaction zone is theoretically partitioned into 4 vertical quadrants of equal volume by a pair of intersecting vertical planes, not more than about 80 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is located in a common one of said vertical quadrants.

7. The bubble column reactor of claim 6 wherein not more than about 60 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is located in a common one of said vertical quadrants.

8. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of said reaction zone is defined by one or more upright sidewalls of said reactor, wherein at least about 25 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is attributable to liquid openings spaced inwardly at least 0.05D from said upright sidewalls.

9. The bubble column reactor of claim 8 wherein at least about 50 percent of the cumulative open area defined by all of said liquid openings is attributable to liquid openings spaced inwardly at least 0.05D from said upright sidewalls.

10. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein a majority of the cumulative open area defined by all of said gas openings is located within about 0.022L of said normally-lower end of said reaction zone.

11. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein a majority of the cumulative open area defined by said gas openings is located within about 0.2D and about 0.018L of said normally-lower end of said reaction zone.

12. The bubble column reactor of claim 1 wherein L is in the range of from about 20 to about 75 meters, D is in the range of from about 2 to about 10 meters, and said L:D ratio is in the range of from about 8:1 to about 20:1.
