Abstract

A dialysis fluid system includes an instrument including a pump actuator and a fluid heater, and a dialysis fluid cassette. The dialysis fluid cassette includes a rigid portion defining a pumping section for operation with the pump actuator and a heating section for operation with the fluid heater. The heating section includes a dialysis fluid inlet, a dialysis fluid outlet, and a dialysis fluid heating area located between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet, the heating section further includes an air separation chamber for collecting air separated from the dialysis fluid.

Claims (40)

1. A dialysis fluid system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including a pump actuator and a fluid heater; and

a dialysis fluid cassette including a rigid portion and a flexible sheet cooperating to form a pumping section for operation with the pump actuator, the dialysis fluid cassette further including a heating section for operation with the fluid heater, the heating section including

a dialysis fluid inlet,

a dialysis fluid outlet, and

a dialysis fluid heating area located between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet, and

an air vent opening located above the fluid outlet when the dialysis fluid cassette is loaded into the dialysis instrument.

2. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the heating section, is structured and arranged to accept heat from an inductive heating element.

3. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the heating section includes a heat transfer wall in fluid communication with the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet.

4. The dialysis fluid system of claim 3 , wherein the heat transfer wall is at least substantially circular in cross-section.

5. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the heating section includes a plurality of baffles configured to increase heat transfer.

6. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , wherein the dialysis instrument includes a valve actuator and wherein the rigid portion further defines at least one valve chamber.

7. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , the heating section including a plurality of baffles configured and arranged to promote movement of air towards the air vent opening.

8. The dialysis fluid system of claim 1 , the heating section including a splash wall located below the air vent opening, the splash wall configured and arranged to prevent fluid from exiting via the air vent opening.

9. A dialysis fluid system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including a pump actuator and a fluid heater; and

a dialysis fluid cassette including a rigid portion and a flexible sheet cooperating to form a pumping section for operation with the pump actuator, the dialysis fluid cassette further including a heating section for operation with the fluid heater, the heating section including a dialysis fluid inlet, a dialysis fluid outlet, and a dialysis fluid heating area located between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet, the heating section further including an air separation chamber for collecting air separated from the dialysis fluid.

10. The dialysis fluid system of claim 9 , wherein the air separation chamber is formed as part of the heating section of the dialysis fluid cassette.

11. The dialysis fluid system of claim 9 , wherein the dialysis fluid air separation chamber is in fluid communication with an air vent opening.

12. The dialysis fluid system of claim 9 , wherein the heating section, is structured and arranged to accept heat from an inductive heating element.

13. The dialysis fluid system of claim 9 , wherein the heating section includes a heat transfer wall located in fluid communication with the dialysis fluid inlet and the dialysis fluid outlet, the heat transfer wall configured and arranged to be heated by the heater and transfer heat to the dialysis fluid.

14. The dialysis fluid system of claim 13 , the heat transfer wall is at least substantially circular in cross-section.

15. A dialysis fluid heating method comprising:

flexing a sheet of a dialysis fluid cassette to pump a dialysis fluid through a dialysis fluid air separation chamber of the dialysis fluid cassette;

using buoyancy forces to remove air from the dialysis fluid pumped through the air separation chamber; and

heating the dialysis fluid pumped through the air separation chamber.

16. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 15 , which includes inductively heating the dialysis fluid.

17. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 15 , which includes resistively heating the dialysis fluid.

18. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 15 , which further includes causing the dialysis fluid to change direction at least one time in the air separation chamber to help separate air from the dialysis fluid.

19. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 15 , which includes preventing the dialysis fluid from escaping from the air separation chamber.

20. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 15 , which includes transmitting heat to a wall of the air separation chamber, causing the wall to heat the dialysis fluid pumped through the air separation chamber.

21. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 16 , wherein pumping the dialysis fluid includes pumping blood or dialysate.

22. A dialysis fluid system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including a pump actuator and a fluid heater; and

a dialysis fluid cassette including a rigid portion having a pumping section for operation with the pump actuator and a heating section for operation with the fluid heater, the heating section including

a dialysis fluid inlet,

a dialysis fluid outlet, and

a dialysis fluid heating area located between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet,

an air vent opening located above the fluid outlet when the dialysis fluid cassette is loaded into the dialysis instrument, and

a plurality of baffles configured to increase heat transfer.
