Abstract

In accordance with certain embodiments of the present disclosure, a mirror assembly for a vehicle is described. The mirror assembly includes a first curved wall, a second curved wall, a bottom portion, and a top portion. The first curved wall and second curved wall each extend from the bottom portion to the top portion and are joined to one another along a respective first side of each of the first curved wall and the second curved wall. The first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, and top portion define an area comprising a reflecting surface. Each respective second side of each of the first curved wall and the second curved wall extends beyond the plane defined by the area and assists in a reduction in drag when fluid flow contacts the mirror assembly.

Claims (22)

1. A mirror assembly for a vehicle comprising a first curved wall, a second curved wall, a bottom portion, and a top portion, the first curved wall and second curved wall each extending from the bottom portion to the top portion and being joined to one another along a respective first side of each of the first curved wall and the second curved wall, wherein the first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, and top portion define an area comprising a reflecting surface, and wherein a respective second side of each of the first curved wall and the second curved wall extends beyond the plane defined by the area and curves toward the other second side to assists in a reduction in drag when fluid flow contacts the mirror assembly.

The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width that is at least about 10% of the overall width of the first curved wall and the second side of the second curved wall has a width that is at least about 10% of the overall width of the second curved wall.

The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width that is at least about 15% of the overall width of the first curved wall and the second side of the second curved wall has a width that is at least about 15% of the overall width of the second curved wall.

The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width that is at least about 20% of the overall width of the first curved wall and the second side of the second curved wall has a width that is at least about 20% of the overall width of the second curved wall.

5. The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein when the mirror housing receives angled fluid flow, the mirror housing generates net thrust.

6. The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the reflecting surface is integrally formed with the mirror assembly.

7. The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the reflecting surface is attached to the area defined by first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, and top portion.

8. The mirror assembly of claim 1 , further comprising reflective material on first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, top portion, or combinations thereof.

9. The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width of about 1 inch to about 5 inches and the second side of the second curved wall has a width of about 1 inch to about 5 inches.

10. The mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width of about 2 inch to about 3 inches and the second side of the second curved wall has a width of about 2 inch to about 3 inches.

11. A method of reducing drag associated with a mirror assembly for a vehicle comprising:

installing a mirror assembly on a vehicle, the mirror assembly comprising a first curved wall, a second curved wall, a bottom portion, and a top portion, the first curved wall and second curved wall each extending from the bottom portion to the top portion and being joined to one another along a respective first side of each of the first curved wall and the second curved wall, wherein the first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, and top portion define an area comprising a reflecting surface, and wherein a respective second side of each of the first curved wall and the second curved wall extends beyond the plane defined by the area and curves toward the other second side; and

subjecting the mirror assembly to angled fluid flow from a windshield of the vehicle, wherein the mirror assembly generates net thrust.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width that is at least about 10% of the overall width of the first curved wall and the second side of the second curved wall has a width that is at least about 10% of the overall width of the second curved wall.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width that is at least about 15% of the overall width of the first curved wall and the second side of the second curved wall has a width that is at least about 15% of the overall width of the second curved wall.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width that is at least about 20% of the overall width of the first curved wall and the second side of the second curved wall has a width that is at least about 20% of the overall width of the second curved wall.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the greater the angle of the fluid flow against the mirror assembly, the greater the net thrust generated.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the reflecting surface is integrally formed with the mirror assembly.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the reflecting surface is attached to the area defined by first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, and top portion.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising reflective material on first curved wall, second curved wall, bottom portion, top portion, or combinations thereof.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width of about 1 inch to about 5 inches and the second side of the second curved wall has a width of about 1 inch to about 5 inches.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second side of the first curved wall has a width of about 2 inch to about 3 inches and the second side of the second curved wall has a width of about 2 inch to about 3 inches.
