Abstract

A multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material including a blend of a resin, a sorbent and an electrically conductive material. The sorbent includes a plurality of sorbent particles uniformly dispersed within the resin so that each sorbent particle of the plurality of sorbent particles is fully surrounded by the resin and the electrically conductive material includes a plurality of conductive particles dispersed within the resin so that the plurality of conductive particles forms a conductive path.

Claims (20)

A multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material comprising a blend of a resin, a sorbent and an electrically conductive material, wherein said sorbent comprises a plurality of sorbent particles uniformly dispersed within said resin so that each sorbent particle of said plurality of sorbent particles is fully surrounded by said resin and said electrically conductive material comprises a plurality of conductive particles dispersed within said resin so that said plurality of conductive particles forms a conductive path.

2. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said resin is a thermoplastic resin and said sorbent is selected from the group consisting of a molecular sieve, silica gel, an ion exchange resin, activated carbon, activated alumina, clay, particulate metal, a salt comprising a CO 2 releasing anion and mixtures thereof.

3. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said sorbent material comprises a zeolite.

4. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said sorbent is a molecular sieve and said resin is selected from the group consisting of polyamide, polyolefin, styrenic polymer, polyester and homogeneous mixtures thereof.

5. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said resin is an ethylene or a propylene-containing homopolymer or copolymer.

6. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said resin bonded sorbent material is formed with the aid of a coupling agent or a compatibilizing agent, wherein the coupling agent or compatibilizing agent is chemically compatible with the resin and improves adhesion or coupling with the sorbent, with the electrically conductive material or with the sorbent and the electrically conductive material.

7. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 6 wherein said coupling or compatibilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of reactive and non-reactive agents.

8. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 7 wherein said compatibilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of a metal, an acrylate, stearate, block copolymer, maleate, epoxy, silane, titanate and mixtures thereof.

9. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 6 wherein the resin is a polypropylene homopolymer, the sorbent is a molecular sieve, the compatibilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of: a maleate, a titanate and combinations thereof, and the electrically conductive material is selected from the group consisting of: a carbon fiber, a carbon fiber with a nickel component, a conductive carbon black, and combinations thereof.

10. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 9 wherein the multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material comprises from about forty weight percent (40 wt %) to about sixty weight percent (60 wt %) resin, from about thirty weight percent (30 wt %) to about forty weight percent (40 wt %) sorbent, from about five weight percent (5 wt %) to about twenty weight percent (20 wt %) electrically conductive material and from about two weight percent (2 wt %) to about three weight percent (3 wt %) compatibilizing agent.

11. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein the resin is a polypropylene homopolymer, the sorbent is a molecular sieve and the electrically conductive material is selected from the group consisting of: a carbon fiber, a carbon fiber with a nickel component, a conductive carbon black, and combinations thereof.

12. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 11 wherein the multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material comprises from about forty-five weight percent (45 wt %) to about sixty weight percent (60 wt %) resin, from about thirty weight percent (30 wt %) to about forty weight percent (40 wt %) sorbent and from about five weight percent (5 wt %) to about twenty weight percent (20 wt %) electrically conductive material.

13. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material comprises from about twenty-five weight percent (25 wt %) to about ninety weight percent (90 wt %) resin, from about five weight percent (5 wt %) to about fifty-five weight percent (55 wt %) sorbent, and from about five weight percent (5 wt %) to about twenty weight percent (20 wt %) electrically conductive material.

14. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein said multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material comprises from about thirty-five weight percent (35 wt %) to about sixty-five weight percent (65 wt %) resin, from about thirty weight percent (30 wt %) to about fifty weight percent (50 wt %) sorbent, and from about five weight percent (5 wt %) to about fifteen weight percent (15 wt %) electrically conductive material.

15. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein the electrically conductive material is selected from the group consisting of: copper flake, nickel flake, stainless steel flake, stainless steel fiber, copper fiber, conductive carbon black, carbon fiber, carbon fiber with a nickel component, and combinations thereof.

16. The multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material of claim 1 wherein the multi-functional resin bonded sorbent material comprises a single resin.
