Abstract

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle includes the steps of providing a user-removable telematics component with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device, a data pump, and a short range wireless personal area network transceiver (e.g., Bluetooth transceiver), communicatively connecting the telematics component to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a vehicle short range wireless personal area network transceiver operable to connect and communicate with at least one of at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device and a least one vehicle communications bus, receiving at the data pump a request from the at least one mobile communication device to perform a vehicle function, and performing the vehicle function with the telematics component.

Claims (37)

1. A method for providing telematics to a vehicle, which comprises: providing a user-removable telematics component with:

a Global Positioning System (GPS) device;

a data pump; and

a short range wireless personal area network transceiver;

communicatively connecting the telematics component to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a vehicle short range wireless personal area network transceiver operable to connect and communicate with:

at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device; and

at least one vehicle communications bus;

receiving at the data pump a request from the at least one mobile communication device to perform a vehicle function; and

performing the vehicle function with the telematics component by communicating a command to the at least one vehicle communications bus through the integrated communication device of the vehicle.

2. The method according to claim 1 , which further comprises, before carrying out the vehicle function, verifying that the at least one mobile communication device is one of the currently paired mobile communication device, the previously paired mobile communication device, and the pre-defined mobile communication device.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving step is carried out by receiving the request to perform the vehicle function from at least one of an off-site telematics provider, a cell phone, an email, a general computing device, and a website.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving step is carried out by receiving the request to perform the vehicle function through a communications path between the data pump and at least one of an off-site telematics provider, a cell phone, an email, a general computing device, and a website, the communications path excluding the integrated communication device.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the receiving step is carried out by receiving the request to perform the vehicle function with the data pump and automatically carrying out the vehicle function with the telematics component.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the vehicle function is selected from at least one of a vehicle unlock function, a vehicle remote start function, a vehicle remote location report function, a vehicle remote diagnostic report function, a vehicle remote charge start function, a vehicle remote charge stop function, and a vehicle remote charge status report function.

7. A method for providing telematics to a vehicle, which comprises:

providing a user-removable telematics component with:

a Global Positioning System (GPS) device;

a data pump; and

a short range wireless personal area network transceiver;

communicatively connecting the telematics component to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a memory holding a list uniquely identifying at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device;

receiving at the data pump a request from the at least one mobile communication device to perform a vehicle function; and

transmitting information related to the request out from the telematics component utilizing a communications path of the data pump, wherein the transmitted

information related to the request is sent to one or more of an off-site telematics provider, a cell phone, an email, a general computing device, and a website.

8. The method according to claim 7 , which further comprises sending information related to the request from the at least one of the off-site telematics provider, the cell phone, the email, the general computing device, and the website automatically through the at least one mobile communication device.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the information related to the request is at least one of an approval of the vehicle function and a confirmation of the vehicle function.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the vehicle function is a function selected from at least one of a vehicle unlock function, a vehicle remote start function, a vehicle remote location report function, a vehicle remote diagnostic report function, a vehicle remote charge start function, a vehicle remote charge stop function, and a vehicle remote charge status report function.

11. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the communications path of the data pump is from the data pump to the integrated communication device of the vehicle and from the integrated communication device of the vehicle through the at least one mobile communication device.

12. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the communications path of the data pump is from the data pump, through the transceiver, and through the at least one mobile communication device.

13. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the integrated communication device of the vehicle further comprises a short range wireless personal area network transceiver and wherein the communications path of the data pump is a communications path from the data pump through the transceiver of the telematics component, through the transceiver of the vehicle, and through the at least one mobile communication device.

14. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the transmitting step is carried out by transmitting the information related to the request out from the telematics component utilizing a communications path between the at least one of the off-site telematics provider, the cell phone, the email, the general computing device, and the website and the data pump, the communications path excluding the integrated communication device.

15. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the sending step is carried out by sending a response to the information related to the request from the at least one of the off-site telematics provider, the cell phone, the email, the general computing device, and the website automatically through the at least one mobile communication device utilizing a communications path between the at least one of at least one of the off-site telematics provider, the cell phone, the email, the general computing device, and the website and the at least one mobile communication device, the communications path excluding the telematics component.

16. The method according to claim 7 , wherein:

the integrated communication device of the vehicle includes a short range wireless personal area network transceiver; and

the communicative connecting step is carried out by communicatively connecting the transceiver of the telematics component to the transceiver of the integrated communication device of the vehicle.

17. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the vehicle function is a function selected from at least one of a vehicle unlock function, a vehicle remote start function, a vehicle remote location report function, a vehicle remote diagnostic report function, a vehicle remote charge start function, a vehicle remote charge stop function, and a vehicle remote charge status report function.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the short range wireless personal area network transceiver is a Bluetooth transceiver.

19. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the short range wireless personal area network transceiver is a Bluetooth transceiver.
