Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to polycrystalline diamond compact (“PDC”) including a polycrystalline diamond (“PCD”) table that bonded to a cobalt-nickel alloy cemented carbide substrate. The cobalt-nickel alloy cemented carbide substrate provides both erosion resistance and corrosion resistance to the cemented carbide substrate. In an embodiment, a PDC includes a cemented carbide substrate including cobalt-nickel alloy cementing constituent. The PDC further includes a PCD table bonded to the cemented carbide substrate.

Claims (31)

1. A polycrystalline diamond compact, comprising:

a cemented carbide substrate including a cobalt-nickel alloy cementing constituent, the cemented carbide substrate having a first cemented carbide portion including a first concentration of nickel and a second cemented carbide portion bonded to the first cemented carbide portion, the second cemented carbide portion including a second concentration of nickel that is greater than the first concentration; and

a polycrystalline diamond table directly bonded to the first cemented carbide portion of the cemented carbide substrate, the polycrystalline diamond table including an unleached portion that is substantially free of nickel, the polycrystalline diamond table further including a plurality of bonded-together diamond grains defining a plurality of interstitial regions, at least a portion of the interstitial regions including cobalt disposed therein.

2. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the first cemented carbide portion exhibits a substantially conical geometry.

3. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table is integrally formed with the cemented carbide substrate.

4. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table is a pre-sintered polycrystalline diamond table.

5. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table comprises a leached region from which the cobalt has been depleted.

6. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the cobalt-nickel alloy cementing constituent comprises about 30 weight % to about 50 weight % cobalt and about 50 weight % to about 70 weight % nickel.

7. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table comprises about 0 weight % to about 1 weight % nickel.

8. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table comprises less than about 0.25 weight % nickel.

9. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table comprises about 0 weight % nickel.

10. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the cobalt is in the form of substantially pure cobalt and/or a cobalt alloy.

11. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 1 wherein the first cemented carbide portion exhibits a substantially planar geometry.

12. A rotary drill bit, comprising:

a bit body including a leading end structure configured to facilitate drilling a subterranean formation;

a plurality of blades; and

a plurality of cutting elements mounted to at least one of the plurality of blades, at least one of the cutting elements including,

a cemented carbide substrate including a cobalt-nickel alloy cementing constituent, the cemented carbide substrate having a first cemented carbide portion including a first concentration of nickel and a second cemented carbide portion bonded to the first cemented carbide portion, the second cemented carbide portion including a second concentration of nickel that is greater than the first concentration; and

a polycrystalline diamond table directly bonded to the first cemented carbide portion of the cemented carbide substrate, the polycrystalline diamond table including an unleached portion that is substantially free of nickel, the polycrystalline diamond table further including a plurality of bonded-together diamond grains defining a plurality of interstitial regions, at least a portion of the interstitial regions including cobalt disposed therein.

13. A polycrystalline diamond compact, comprising:

a cemented carbide substrate including a cobalt-nickel alloy cementing constituent, a first cemented carbide portion including a first concentration of nickel, and a second cemented carbide portion bonded to the first cemented carbide portion, the second cemented carbide portion including a second concentration of nickel that is greater than the first concentration, the first cemented carbide portion having a lateral periphery that is substantially surrounded by the second cemented carbide portion;

a polycrystalline diamond table that is substantially free of nickel and bonded to the first cemented carbide portion, the polycrystalline diamond table including a plurality of bonded-together diamond grains defining a plurality of interstitial regions, at least a portion of the interstitial regions including cobalt disposed therein.

14. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the first cemented carbide portion exhibits a substantially conical geometry.

15. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table is integrally formed with the cemented carbide substrate.

16. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table is a pre-sintered polycrystalline diamond table.

17. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table includes a leached region from which the cobalt has been depleted.

18. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the second cemented carbide portion includes a cobalt-nickel alloy cementing constituent having about 30 weight % to about 50 weight % cobalt and about 50 weight % to about 70 weight % nickel.

19. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table includes about 0 weight % to about 1 weight % nickel.

20. The polycrystalline diamond compact of claim 13 wherein the polycrystalline diamond table includes less than about 0.25 weight % nickel.
