Abstract

A system is provided for allowing mobile stations to exchange identification information using a predetermined communication path for the purpose of obtaining identification information to use in establishing a different communication path for communicating.

Claims (91)

1. A mobile station comprising:

a processor;

instructions for execution by the processor for detecting when a first network identification code associated with the mobile station has changed;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending a first message containing the first network identification code to a second mobile station via a first service gateway, wherein a message type of the first message is selected from a group comprising an email message, an SMS message and a HTTP message;

instructions for execution by the processor for receiving a second message containing a second network identification code associated with the second mobile station that is sent by the second mobile station via a second service gateway;

memory for storing the second network identification code; and

instructions for execution by the processor for requesting a wireless communication link to the second mobile station using the second network identification code wherein the communication link does not traverse the first or second service gateway.

2. The mobile station of claim 1 wherein the message types of the first and second messages are different.

3. The mobile station of claim 1 wherein the first service gateway is the same physical device as the second service gateway.

4. The mobile station of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first service gateway and the second service gateway comprises an email gateway, a short messaging service center (SMSC), a SMSC with an IP address exchange service, an Internet gateway, or an Internet gateway with an IP address service.

5. The mobile station of claim 1 wherein the second message comprises an email message, a short messaging service (SMS) message, or HTTP packets.

6. The mobile station of claim 1 further comprising instructions for execution by the processor for querying an IP address service to determine the IP address for another mobile station.

7. The mobile station of claim 1 further comprising instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to a third mobile station using a message type that is different from the message type used in sending the first network identification code to the second mobile.

8. The mobile station of claim 1 further comprising instructions for execution by the processor for re-sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station after the code has changed using a message type that is different from the message type used in sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station in a prior transmission.

9. The mobile station of claim 1 , wherein the first network identification code and the second network identification code comprise IP addresses assigned by a wireless network.

10. The mobile station of claim 1 , wherein the first message further comprises status information, location information, or both status and location information.

11. The mobile station of claim 1 , further comprising instruction for execution by the processor for registering the second mobile station as an associate of the mobile station.

12. The mobile station of claim 11 , wherein the registration of the second mobile station is recorded in a mapping table residing either internally or externally to the mobile station.

13. The mobile station of claim 12 , wherein the mapping table comprises email addresses or SMS addresses of associates of the first mobile station.

14. The mobile station of claim 1 , wherein the communication link is a peer-to-peer communication link, an instant messaging communication link, or a communication channel for a web server to provide web pages for information exchange.

15. A mobile station comprising:

a processor;

instructions for execution by the processor for detecting when a first network identification code associated with the mobile station has changed;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to a second mobile station in a first message via a first service gateway, wherein a message type of the first message is selected from a group comprising an email message, an SMS message and a HTTP message;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to a third mobile station using a message type that is different from the message type used in sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station;

instructions for execution by the processor for receiving a second network identification code associated with the second mobile station in a second message that is sent by the second mobile station via a second service gateway and for storing the second network identification code; and

instructions for execution by the processor for requesting a wireless communication link to the second mobile station using the second network identification code wherein the communication link does not traverse the first or second service gateway.

16. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein a message type for the first and second messages is selected from a group comprising an email message, a SMS message and a HTTP message, and wherein the message type for the second message is the same as the message type for the first message.

17. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the first service gateway is the same physical device as the second service gateway.

18. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the first or second service gateways is an Internet gateway.

19. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the first network identification code and the second network identification code comprise IP addresses assigned by a wireless network.

20. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the first message further comprises status information, location information, or both status and location information.

21. The mobile station of claim 15 , further comprising instruction for execution by the processor for registering the second mobile station as an associate of the mobile station.

22. The mobile station of claim 21 , wherein the registration of the second mobile station is recorded in a mapping table residing either internally or externally to the mobile station.

23. The mobile station of claim 22 , wherein the mapping table comprises email addresses or SMS addresses of associates of the first mobile station.

24. The mobile station of claim 15 , wherein the communication link is a peer-to-peer communication link, an instant messaging communication link, or a communication channel for a web server to provide web pages for information exchange.

25. A mobile station comprising:

a processor;

instructions for execution by the processor for detecting when a first network identification code associated with the mobile station has changed;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to a second mobile station in a first message via a first service gateway, wherein a message type of the first message is selected from a group comprising an email message, an SMS message and a HTTP message;

instructions for execution by the processor for re-sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station after the code has changed using a message type that is different from the message type used in sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station in a prior transmission;

instructions for execution by the processor for receiving a second network identification code associated with the second mobile station in a second message that is sent by the second mobile station via a second service gateway and for storing the second network identification code; and

instructions for execution by the processor for requesting a wireless communication link to the second mobile station using the second network identification code wherein the communication link does not traverse the first or second service gateway.

26. The mobile station of claim 25 , wherein a message type for the first and second messages is selected from a group comprising an email message, a SMS message and a HTTP message, and wherein the message type for the second message is the same as the message type for the first message.

27. The mobile station of claim 25 , wherein the first service gateway is the same physical device as the second service gateway.

28. The mobile station of claim 25 , wherein at least one of the first or second service gateways is an Internet gateway.

29. The mobile station of claim 25 , wherein the first network identification code and the second network identification code comprise IP addresses assigned by a wireless network.

30. The mobile station of claim 25 , wherein the first message further comprises status information, location information, or both status and location information.

31. The mobile station of claim 25 , further comprising instruction for execution by the processor for registering the second mobile station as an associate of the mobile station.

32. The mobile station of claim 31 , wherein the registration of the second mobile station is recorded in a mapping table residing either internally or externally to the mobile station.

33. The mobile station of claim 32 , wherein the mapping table comprises email addresses or SMS addresses of associates of the first mobile station.

34. The mobile station of claim 25 , wherein the communication link is a peer-to-peer communication link, an instant messaging communication link, or a communication channel for a web server to provide web pages for information exchange.

35. A mobile station comprising:

a processor;

instructions for execution by the processor for detecting when a first network identification code associated with the mobile station has changed;

instruction for execution by the processor for registering a second mobile station as an associate of the mobile station in a table that resides in memory in the mobile station;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station in a first message via a first service gateway;

instructions for execution by the processor for receiving a second network identification code associated with the second mobile station in a second message that is sent by the second mobile station via a second service gateway and for storing the second network identification code; and

instructions for execution by the processor for requesting a wireless communication link to the second mobile station using the second network identification code wherein the communication link does not traverse the first or second service gateway.

36. The mobile station of claim 35 , wherein a message type for the first and second messages is selected from a group comprising an email message, a SMS message and a HTTP message, and wherein the message type for the second message is the same as the message type for the first message.

37. The mobile station of claim 35 , wherein the first service gateway is the same physical device as the second service gateway.

38. The mobile station of claim 35 , wherein at least one of the first or second service gateways is an Internet gateway.

39. The mobile station of claim 35 , wherein the first network identification code and the second network identification code comprise IP addresses assigned by a wireless network.

40. The mobile station of claim 35 , wherein the first message further comprises status information, location information, or both status and location information.

41. The mobile station of claim 35 , wherein the communication link is a peer-to-peer communication link, an instant messaging communication link, or a communication channel for a web server to provide web pages for information exchange.

42. A mobile station comprising:

a processor;

instructions for execution by the processor for detecting when a first network identification code associated with the mobile station has changed;

instruction for execution by the processor for registering a second mobile station as an associate of the mobile station in a table that is external to the first mobile station;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station in a first message via a first service gateway;

instructions for execution by the processor for receiving a second network identification code associated with the second mobile station in a second message that is sent by the second mobile station via a second service gateway and for storing the second network identification code; and

instructions for execution by the processor for requesting a wireless communication link to the second mobile station using the second network identification code wherein the communication link does not traverse the first or second service gateway.

43. The mobile station of claim 42 , wherein a message type for the first and second messages is selected from a group comprising an email message, a SMS message and a HTTP message, and wherein the message type for the second message is the same as the message type for the first message.

44. The mobile station of claim 42 , wherein the first service gateway is the same physical device as the second service gateway.

45. The mobile station of claim 42 , wherein at least one of the first or second service gateways is an Internet gateway.

46. The mobile station of claim 42 , wherein the first network identification code and the second network identification code comprise IP addresses assigned by a wireless network.

47. The mobile station of claim 42 , wherein the first message further comprises status information, location information, or both status and location information.

48. The mobile station of claim 42 , wherein the communication link is a peer-to-peer communication link, an instant messaging communication link, or a communication channel for a web server to provide web pages for information exchange.

49. A mobile station comprising:

a processor;

instructions for execution by the processor for detecting when a first network identification code associated with the mobile station has changed;

instruction for execution by the processor for registering a second mobile station as an associate of the mobile station in a table that comprises email addresses or SMS addresses of associates of the mobile station;

instructions for execution by the processor for sending the first network identification code to the second mobile station in a first message via a first service gateway;

instructions for execution by the processor for receiving a second network identification code associated with the second mobile station in a second message that is sent by the second mobile station via a second service gateway and for storing the second network identification code; and

instructions for execution by the processor for requesting a wireless communication link to the second mobile station using the second network identification code wherein the communication link does not traverse the first or second service gateway.

50. The mobile station of claim 49 , wherein a message type for the first and second messages is selected from a group comprising an email message, a SMS message and a HTTP message, and wherein the message type for the second message is the same as the message type for the first message.

51. The mobile station of claim 49 , wherein the first service gateway is the same physical device as the second service gateway.

52. The mobile station of claim 49 , wherein at least one of the first or second service gateways is an Internet gateway.

53. The mobile station of claim 49 , wherein the first network identification code and the second network identification code comprise IP addresses assigned by a wireless network.

54. The mobile station of claim 49 , wherein the first message further comprises status information, location information, or both status and location information.

55. The mobile station of claim 49 , wherein the communication link is a peer-to-peer communication link, an instant messaging communication link, or a communication channel for a web server to provide web pages for information exchange.
