Abstract

Arc resistant enclosures for dry-type transformers. More particularly, transformer enclosures having one or more arc-resistant features, including arc channels, arc fault dampers, and arc fault plenums, and methods for providing same.

Claims (21)

1. An arc resistant enclosure for a dry-type transformer, comprising:

a base structure;

a dry-type transformer seated on the base structure;

a front wall comprising a first and second corner piece, a first face frame proximate the first and second corner pieces defining a first access opening, and a first access panel arranged to cover the first access opening;

at least two additional walls;

a roof structure secured to the walls;

at least one ventilation opening in either the roof or walls;

wherein each wall is secured to the base structure, forming an enclosed space for housing the transformer,

wherein the front wall contains at least one longitudinal seam covered by an arc channel, and

wherein the arc channel is attached in such a manner that, upon an arc event, arc gas is substantially prevented from escaping the enclosure through the covered longitudinal seam.

2. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 1 further comprising an arc fault plenum connected to the at least one ventilation opening.

3. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the at least one ventilation opening is located in the roof structure.

4. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the front wall further comprises a second face frame defining a second access opening proximate the first face frame and second corner piece and a second access panel arranged to cover the second access opening, wherein the at least two additional walls consists of two sidewalls and a back wall, wherein the intersection between the first corner piece and the first face frame defines a first longitudinal seam, the intersection between the first face frame and a first longitudinal edge of the first access panel defines a second longitudinal seam, the intersection between the first face frame and a second longitudinal edge of the first access panel defines a third longitudinal seam, the intersection between the first face frame and the second face frame defines a fourth longitudinal seam, the intersection between the second face frame and a first longitudinal edge of the second access panel defines a fifth longitudinal seam, the intersection between a second longitudinal edge of the second access panel and the second face frame defines a sixth longitudinal seam, the intersection between the second face frame and the second corner piece defines a seventh longitudinal seam, wherein a first arc channel covers the first and second longitudinal seams, a second arc channel covers the third, fourth, and fifth longitudinal seams, and a third arc channel covers the sixth and seventh longitudinal seams, and wherein the arc channels are attached in such a manner that, upon an arc event, arc gas is substantially prevented from escaping the enclosure through the covered longitudinal seams.

5. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 3 , wherein the roof structure contains three ventilation openings and an arc fault plenum is attached to each ventilation opening.

6. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 4 , wherein the at least one ventilation opening is located in the roof structure.

7. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 5 , wherein each arc fault plenum comprises at least three flanged segments.

8. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 6 further comprising an arc fault plenum connected to the at least one ventilation opening.

9. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 7 , wherein each segment is cubic.

10. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 8 , wherein the roof structure contains three ventilation openings and an arc fault plenum is attached to each ventilation opening.

11. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 10 , wherein each arc fault plenum comprises at least three flanged segments.

12. The arc resistant enclosure of claim 11 , wherein each segment is cubic.
