Abstract

A surgical cutting and fastening instrument having an end effector including a housing for holding staples and a sled having a camming surface for ejecting the staples. The instrument has a main drive shaft assembly for pushing the sled through the housing to eject the staples. Also included is a motor operatively coupled to the actuation shaft. The motor includes a drive assembly. The instrument further includes a sensor in the drive assembly to measure an actuation load. The instrument further includes a sensor for measuring a power output of the motor. The instrument further includes a console for remote control of the motor, the console comprising hand manipulated controls. The instrument further includes a means for providing proportionate feedback from the sensors to the hand manipulated controls.

Claims (11)

1. A surgical cutting and fastening instrument comprising:

a. an end effector comprising a housing for holding staples, and a sled having a camming surface for ejecting the staples;

b. a main drive shaft assembly for pushing the sled through the housing to eject the staples;

c. a motor operatively coupled to an actuation shaft the actuation shaft housed within a rigid outer shaft, said motor comprising a drive assembly;

d. a sensor in the drive assembly to measure an actuation load;

e. a sensor for measuring power output of the motor;

f. a console for remote control of the motor, said console comprising hand manipulated controls; and

g. a means for providing proportionate displacement feedback to a trigger from the sensors.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the motor is adjacent to the actuation shaft.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the motor is located substantially within the actuation shaft.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the consol comprises an electrically wired connection to the motor.
