Abstract

A headset having game, chat and microphone audio signals is provided with a programmable signal processor for individually modifying the audio signals and a memory configured to store a plurality of user-selectable signal-processing parameter settings that determine the manner in which the audio signals will be altered by the signal processor. The parameter settings collectively form a preset, and one or more user-operable controls can select and activate a preset from the plurality of presets stored in memory. The parameters stored in the selected preset can be loaded into the signal processor such that the sound characteristics of the audio paths are modified in accordance with the parameter settings in the selected preset.

Claims (29)

1. A headset system operable to receive a plurality of audio signals from a device, the headset system comprising:

a programmable signal processor operable to modify an audio signal in the plurality of audio signals;

a memory operable to store a plurality of user-selectable signal-processing parameter settings that determine the manner in which the signal processor is operable to modify the audio signal in the plurality of audio signals, the parameter settings collectively forming a preset, the memory being operable to store a plurality of presets; and

an input operable to receive a control signal for selecting and activating a preset from the plurality of presets stored in memory such that the sound characteristics of the audio signal in the plurality of audio signals are modified in accordance with the parameter settings in the selected preset, wherein the control signal is based on activity in the device, wherein the activity in the device is other than a selection of the audio signal in the plurality of audio signals, wherein the control signal comprises one or more tones.

2. The headset system of claim 1 comprising:

a data port connection operable to receive the parameter settings of a preset via a connection to a personal computer.

3. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the signal processor is located in an external device which processes the plurality of audio signals and sends the plurality of audio signals to a headset via a wired or wireless connection.

4. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein a preset may be selected with controls located on a headset.

5. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the programmable signal processor is controlled by an external device connected to the headset system either wirelessly or via a data cable and secured to the user's arm, on the belt, or other section of the body, the external control device has a group of preset buttons for easily selecting the presets in the headset system, and the external control device has one or more programmable controls that when activated control parameters in the signal processor.

6. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the selection of presets can be made by a set of buttons, one of which is used to switch between a plurality of presets and another of which is used as a master preset, thereby enabling a user to alternate between the two selected presets by pressing the master preset button.

7. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the presets are operably selected without user interaction by decoding the one or more tones embedded within the audio track of a game and transmitted to the headset system via an audio path connected to the headset system, thereby enabling the presets in the headset system to change in accordance with the decoding of the tones.

8. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the selection of presets can be made by speaking into a headset microphone and having a speech recognition device decode the voice command for selecting the preset.

9. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the parameters in the signal processor may be stored, displayed and edited with a personal computer software program.

10. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the programmable signal processor may be reprogrammed via a data connection to an external personal computer.

11. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the programmable signal processor comprises a plurality of signal paths, wherein each signal path in the plurality of signal paths includes a noise gate to remove undesired sounds whose amplitude is below a preset threshold, thereby improving the signal-to-noise ratio of an audio signal on a respective audio path.

12. The headset system of claim 1 comprising a volume limiter incorporating a variable threshold level operable to limit the maximum volume level such that it does not exceed a predetermined amplitude.

13. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein a sound storage device announces system status and user input activation, voice data in the sound storage device may be replaced by recording and editing new sound data on a personal computer and reloading the data into the sound storage device to change the voice prompts, or the data in the sound storage device may be replaced by downloading new sound data from an Internet web site and transferring the new voice sounds to the sound storage device via a personal computer.

14. The headset system of claim 1 comprising a frequency-limited volume expander comprising:

a variable gain amplifier with an adjustable threshold such that the sound level of audio signals below the predetermined threshold volume is operably increased without affecting the sound level of higher volume audio signals outside of the frequency range,

an input filter operable to limit the frequency bands processed by the variable gain amplifier, and

a balance control operable to adjust an amount of processed and unprocessed game sound heard in the headset system.

15. The headset system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of audio signals comprises a game audio signal, a chat audio signal and a microphone audio signal.

16. A headset operable to receive a plurality of audio signals from a device, wherein the headset comprises:

a signal processor operable to modify the sound characteristics of one or more audio signals in the plurality of audio signals;

a memory operable to store a plurality of presets, each preset comprising one or more parameters that determine the operation of the signal processor; and

an input operable to receive a control signal that selects a preset from the plurality of presets stored in memory, wherein the control signal is based on activity in the device, wherein the activity in the device is other than a selection of the one or more audio signals, wherein the control signal comprises one or more tones.

17. The headset in claim 16 , wherein the plurality of audio signals comprises a game audio signal, a chat audio signal and a microphone audio signal.

18. The headset system in claim 16 , wherein the control signal is a wireless signal.

19. The headset system in claim 16 , wherein the control signal is generated by a video game.
