Abstract

A security device a plurality of cables which are securable about an item of merchandise with a locking member and a cable-tightening mechanism each connected to the cables in a spaced apart manner. The locking member includes a key portion for unlocking the tightening mechanism when the cable is removed from the item. The tightening mechanism includes a spool and a ratchet mechanism. Alternate embodiments for locking and unlocking the ratchet mechanism are disclosed. The tightening mechanism carries sense loops which if compromised actuate an onboard audible alarm. The cables are part of one or more of the sense loops. The device is configured to sound a security gate alarm upon passing through the gate and upon simply reaching a certain distance from the gate. The tightening mechanism includes a housing having a flip-up handle for tightening the ratchet mechanism to tighten the cable.

Claims (36)

1. A security device comprising:

a housing;

a first cable;

a spool within the housing which is rotatable about a vertical axis in a cable-tightening direction to wind the cable thereon and rotatable in an opposite cable-loosening direction to unwind the cable therefrom; and

a first engaging member within the housing which is rotatable with the spool relative to the housing about the vertical axis and which is movable upwardly and downwardly relative to the spool between a locked position which prevents rotation of the spool in the cable-loosening direction and an unlocked position which allows rotation of the spool in the cable-loosening direction.

2. The device of claim 1 further comprising a rotatable member within the housing which is rotatatable relative to the spool, housing and first engaging member.

3. The device of claim 2 further comprising a sliding engagement between the rotatable member and first engaging member during rotation of the rotatable member.

4. The device of claim 3 further comprising a frictional engagement between the rotatable member and first engaging member; wherein the rotatable member rotates in response to rotation of the spool via the frictional engagement.

5. The device of claim 3 further comprising a first annular surface on one of the first engaging member and rotatable member; wherein the sliding engagement is between the first annular surface and the other of the first engaging member and rotatable member.

6. The device of claim 5 further comprising a second annular surface on the other of the first engaging member and rotatable member; wherein sliding engagement is between the first and second annular surfaces.

7. The device of claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is rotatatable about the vertical axis.

8. The device of claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is movable upwardly and downwardly relative to the housing and spool.

9. The device of claim 8 further comprising a slot formed in the rotatable member; and a projection which extends upwardly within the housing; wherein the rotatable member is movable upwardly and downwardly with the projection received in the slot.

10. The device of claim 2 wherein the rotatable member rotates in response to rotation of the spool in the cable-tightening direction.

11. The device of claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is a disc.

12. The device of claim 2 wherein one of the first engaging member and rotatable member comprises an annular wall which has a circular inner perimeter defining a circular opening; and the other of the first engaging member and rotatable member comprises a wall which has a circular outer perimeter and which is received in the circular opening with the circular inner and outer perimeters closely adjacent one another.

13. The device of claim 2 wherein the rotatable member is movable upwardly and downwardly with the first engaging member.

14. The device of claim 2 further comprising a slot formed in the rotatable member; and a projection which extends upwardly within the housing; wherein the rotatable member is rotatable relative to the projection with the projection received in the slot.

15. The device of claim 1 wherein the first engaging member comprises a body and a plurality of locking pawls which are mounted on the body and movable relative to the body radially inwardly toward the axis and radially outwardly away from the axis.

16. The device of claim 1 wherein the spool comprises a hub and upper and lower flanges extending radially outwardly from the hub; and the first engaging member is movable upwardly and downwardly relative to the hub and flanges.

17. The device of claim 1 further comprising a top and bottom of the housing; an opening formed in the bottom of the housing through which the vertical axis passes; and a handle on the top of the housing for rotating the spool in the cable-tightening direction.

18. The device of claim 1 further comprising a key member; and an opening formed in the housing through which the vertical axis passes; wherein the first engaging member moves from the locked position to the unlocked position in response to insertion of the key member into the opening.

19. A security device comprising:

a housing;

a first cable;

a spool within the housing which is rotatable about a vertical axis in a cable-tightening direction to wind the cable thereon and rotatable in an opposite cable-loosening direction to unwind the cable therefrom;

a first engaging member within the housing which is rotatable with the spool relative to the housing about the vertical axis and which is movable upwardly and downwardly relative to the housing between a locked position which prevents rotation of the spool in the cable-loosening direction and an unlocked position which allows rotation of the spool in the cable-loosening direction;

a rotatable member within the housing;

a sliding engagement between the first engaging member and rotatable member during rotation of the rotatable member relative to the spool, housing and first engaging member.

20. A security device comprising:

a housing;

a first cable;

a spool within the housing which is rotatable about a vertical axis in a cable-tightening direction to wind the cable thereon and rotatable in an opposite cable-loosening direction to unwind the cable therefrom;

a first engaging member within the housing which is rotatable with the spool and which is movable upwardly and downwardly between a lowered locked position which prevents rotation of the spool in the cable-loosening direction and a raised unlocked position which allows rotation of the spool in the cable-loosening direction;

a retaining member within the housing which is movable upwardly and downwardly and which is rotatable relative to the first engaging member between a retaining position which prevents the first engaging member from moving from the raised unlocked position to the lowered locked position and a non-retaining position which allows the first engaging member to move from the raised unlocked position to the lowered locked position; and

a seating ledge within the housing on which the retaining member is seated in the retaining position and on which the retaining member is not seated in the non-retaining position.
