Community-based parental controls

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

maintaining, on one or more computer-readable storage devices, a plurality of different rating groups, each rating group providing a rating that relates to at least one piece of electronic content;

receiving, from a first user, a request to form a new rating group and an identification of two or more user characteristics required of users to join the new rating group and submit ratings to the new rating group;

forming the new rating group based on the request;

adding the new rating group to the maintained plurality of rating groups;

receiving rating information evaluating a piece of electronic content from one or more additional users;

determining, by at least one processor, if the one or more additional users possess any of the two or more user characteristics required to join the new rating group and submit ratings to the new rating group;

if the one or more additional users possess at least one of the user characteristics, adding, by the at least one processor, the one or more additional users and the rating information evaluating the piece of electronic content to the new rating group;

if the one or more additional users do not possess any of the two or more user characteristics, denying, by the at least one processor, the one or more additional users access to the new rating group;

weighting the rating information received from the one or more additional users, by the at least one processor, based on how many of the two or more user characteristics the one or more additional users possess;

receiving a request from the first user, or another used associated with the first user, to access the piece of electronic content; and

granting or denying, by the at least one processor, the request to access the piece of electronic content based on the rating information in the new rating group.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rating information in the new rating group is sent to a second rating group associated with the first user for use in determining whether to allow one or more additional users to access the piece of electronic content.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising creating a compiled rating by combining a first rating associated with the new rating group and a second rating associated with a second rating group.

4. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause a computer system to:

maintain, on one or more computer-readable storage devices, a plurality of different rating groups, each rating group providing a rating that relates to at least one piece of electronic content;

receive, from a first user, a request to form a new rating group and an identification of two or more user characteristics required of users to join the new rating group and submit ratings to the new rating group;

form the new rating group based on the request;

add the new rating group to the maintained plurality of rating groups;

receive rating information evaluating a piece of electronic content from one or more additional users;

determine if the one or more additional users possess any of the two or more user characteristics required to join the new rating group and submit ratings to the new rating group;

add the rating information evaluating the piece of electronic content to the new rating group if the one or more additional users possess at least one of the user characteristics;

deny the rating information evaluating the piece of electronic content from the new rating group if the one or more additional users do not possess any of the two or more user characteristics;

weight the rating information received from the one or more additional users based on how many of the two or more user characteristics the one or more additional users possess;

receive a request from the first user, or another user associated with the first user, to access the piece of electronic content; and

grant or deny the request to access the piece of electronic content based on the rating information in the new rating group.

5. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 4 , wherein the rating information in the new rating group is sent to a second rating group associated with the first user for use in determining whether to allow one or more additional users to access the piece of electronic content.

6. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 4 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the computer system to:

create a compiled rating by combining a first rating associated with the new rating group and a second rating associated with a second rating group.

7. A method comprising:

maintaining, on one or more computer-readable storage devices, a plurality of different rating groups, each rating group providing a rating that relates to at least one piece of electronic content;

receiving, from a first user, a request to form a new rating group and an identification of two or more user characteristics required of users to join the new rating group and submit ratings to the new rating group;

forming the new rating group based on the request;

adding the new rating group to the maintained plurality of rating groups;

receiving a request from an additional user to join the new rating group;

determining, using at least one processor, if the additional user possesses any of the two or more user characteristics required to join the new rating group;

if the additional user possesses at least one of the two or more user characteristics required to join the new rating group, adding the additional user to the new rating group;

if the additional user does not possess any of the two or more user characteristics required to join the new rating group, denying the additional user access to the new rating group;

weighting the rating information received from users in the new rating group, by the at least one processor, based on how many of the two or more user characteristics the users in the new rating group possess;

receiving a request from the first user, or another user associated with the first user, to access the piece of electronic content; and

granting or denying, by the at least one processor, the request to access the piece of electronic content based on the rating information in the new rating group.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising granting a request for the piece of electronic content when there is no compiled rating that exists for the requested piece of content in the new rating group.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising providing the compiled rating by using additional rating information from one or more other rating groups.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the compiled rating is sent to a second rating group associated with the first user for use in determining whether to allow access the requested piece of electronic content.

11. The method of claim 7 , further comprising providing an indication that the requested piece of electronic content is blocked.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two or more user characteristics required of users to join the new rating group comprise a requirement of being a member a given amount of time.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two or more user characteristics required of users to join the new rating group comprise a requirement of a voting consistency.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the rating information and access to the piece of electronic content.

15. The method of claim 7 , wherein the two or more user characteristics required of users to join the new rating group comprise a requirement of a voting consistency.

16. The method of claim 7 , further comprising providing the rating information and access to the piece of electronic content.
