Abstract

A system and method of the present invention allow the playback of recorded data as the data is being recorded. Data is read from a source location, converted into an encoded format and stored in a database. At the same time, the stored data is read from the database, and played as the data is being recorded.

Claims (25)

1 - 26 . (canceled)

27 . A method for recording digitally encoded data, the method comprising:

receiving a first stream of digitally encoded data, the first stream of digitally encoded data being received via a network connection at a rate that is faster than the normal playback rate of said digitally encoded data;

incrementally recording the first stream via a local storage device;

incrementally playing the first stream during the recording of the first stream;

pausing the recording and the playing of the first stream at a first point within the digitally encoded data;

receiving a second stream of the digitally encoded data, the second stream of digitally encoded data being received via a network connection at a rate that is faster than the normal playback rate of said digitally encoded data; and

incrementally recording the second stream via the local storage device starting at the first point within the digitally encoded data.

28 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising incrementally playing the second stream of digitally encoded data starting at the first point within the digitally encoded data during the recording of the second stream.

29 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising incrementally playing the second stream of digitally encoded data starting at a second point within the digitally encoded data during the recording of the of the second stream starting at the first point.

30 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the digitally encoded data is received in packet form transmitted from a remote computer.

31 . The method claim 27 , wherein the digitally encoded data comprises audio data.

32 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the digitally encoded data comprises video data.

33 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the digitally encoded data is received via an optical storage device and the digitally encoded data is stored via a magnetic storage device.

34 . A computer readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed, perform the method of claim 27 .

35 . A method for simultaneously playing and recording streams of audio data, the method comprising:

receiving a first stream of audio data from a first set of audio data, the first stream of audio data being received at a rate that is faster than the normal playback rate of said audio data;

encoding the first stream of audio data to produce a first encoded stream of audio data;

encrypting the first encoded stream of audio data to produce a first encrypted, encoded stream of audio data;

saving the first encrypted, encoded stream of data to a first data file in a first storage location;

reading a second encrypted, encoded stream of audio data from a second data file in a second storage location wherein the reading of the second encrypted, encoded stream of audio data begins while encoding the first stream of audio data;

decrypting the second encrypted, encoded stream of audio data to produce a second encoded stream of audio data; and

decoding and playing the second encoded stream of audio data.

36 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the first data file is the same as the second data file and the first storage location is the same as the second storage location.

37 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the first stream of audio data from a first set of audio data is received from an optical drive.
