Abstract

A self-cleaning litter box ( 50 ) provides various advantages over the prior art. In particular, in one embodiment, the self-cleaning litter box ( 50 ) is configured to use a one piece litter cartridge ( 20 ) having a litter compartment ( 26 ) and a waste compartment 24 . In another embodiment, the cartridge ( 20 ) is non-compartmentalized. In another embodiment, the system includes a rake assembly ( 56 ) configured with a drive assembly ( 58 ) that is protected from waste contamination. In accordance with the invention, the self-cleaning litter box ( 50 ) is configured to be used with all types of litter including crystal type litter.

Claims (22)

1. A litter box machine having a bottom opening receiving a single compartment removable litter tray therein to define a bottom wall of the litter box for carrying litter, said litter tray receiving waste and storing waste under a waste cover in the removable litter tray wherein the litter tray is in contact with a flat surface and the litter box sitting approximate to the floor vertically lifts off of the litter tray by rotation for removal of the tray.

2. The litter box machine of claim 1 , wherein the litter box and litter tray both sit on the flat or floor surface to define a single working unit but are easily detachable from one another when the litter tray is removed.

3. The litter box machine of claim 1 , wherein the litter box generally surrounds the litter tray with no mechanical coupling thereto.

4. The litter box machine of claim 1 , further including an overhanging edge located on the litter box above a top edge of the litter tray to direct waste, scattered litter and urine back into the tray.

5. The litter box machine of claim 1 , wherein an interior surface of the litter box rests on a top edge of the tray when the tray sits on a floor, suspending the litter box above the floor.

6. The litter box machine of claim 1 , further including a pivotally mounted system lid connected at one end of the litter box extending outwardly over a portion of the litter tray where waste is stored to generally cover the waste.

7. The litter box machine of claim 6 , further including a tray waste lid attached to the one end of the tray wherein the system lid couples to the tray waste lid for opening the tray waste lid to receive the waste for storage thereunder.

8. The litter box machine of claim 7 , wherein the system and waste lids are passively coupled to each other by a clip.

9. The litter box machine of claim 7 , wherein the system and waste lids are passively coupled to each other magnetically.

10. The litter box machine of claim 7 , wherein the system and waste lids are passively coupled to each other by a hook-and-loop fastener.

11. The litter box machine of claim 7 , wherein the system and waste lids attach to one another with a manually actuated element.

12. The litter box machine of claim 7 wherein the system and waste lids detach passively from one another when the litter box is lifted off the removable tray.

13. The litter box machine of claim 7 , wherein the system and waste lids detach passively from one another when the litter box is lifted off the tray vertically by rotation.

14. The litter box machine of claim 1 , wherein the litter tray is a single chamber without a barrier connected to the bottom wall between the operation of receiving and storing waste.

15. The litter box machine of claim 1 , wherein the litter box is rotatably lifted off the removable tray to vertically stand on an end whereby the removable tray becomes accessible for replacement or refurbishment for further use.

16. A litter box machine including a housing having at least one sidewall for sitting approximately on a flat surface, the at least one sidewall defining an opening in the top and bottom of said housing receiving waste at the top opening and storing waste near the bottom opening, said bottom opening of the housing vertically lowered onto a removable and non-mechanically coupled single compartment litter tray that sits on the flat surface to define a bottom wall of the litter box machine, the litter tray receiving and storing the waste therein.

17. A method for changing a removable cartridge used in an open bottomed litter box machine having a housing with an open bottom and an open top defined by at least one side wall, the method for changing the removable cartridge comprising the steps of:

lifting the litter box machine substantially vertically off of the cartridge;

resting the litter box machine on end on the at least one side wall;

removing an old cartridge;

locating a new litter cartridge near the litter box machine; and

lowering the litter box machine onto the new cartridge.
