Abstract

Streams of data traffic from various applications may be handled by a network-aware adapter module as part of a greater platform for filtering communicating the streams to intelligent network components. A distinguishing factor associated with a given data stream may be determined and used as a basis for selecting a QoS policy setting for the given data stream. The selected QoS policy setting may then be signaled to a media access control layer to take advantage of the QoS function of the embedded underlying active media type that is active and optimal (both from technical and business perspective) to carry out the communication for the application.

Claims (84)

1. A method of adapting a data stream for input to a media access control (MAC) layer adapted to receive a quality of service QoS policy setting, the method comprising:

receiving a packet associated with a data stream;

determining a distinguishing factor associated with the data stream, the distinguishing factor comprising an identification of a media type associated with the data stream;

selecting, based on the distinguishing factor, a QoS policy setting for the data stream; and

signaling the QoS policy setting to the MAC layer by:

adding information representative of the QoS policy setting to information in the packet to form a modified packet; and

injecting the modified packet into a network stack.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the data stream comprises a plurality of Internet Protocol (IP) packets and the step of determining a distinguishing factor comprises inspecting a header field in at least one packet among the plurality of IP packets.

3. The method as defined in claim 2 , wherein the header field comprises an indication of at least one information element selected from a group consisting of:

a source address for the packet;

a destination address for the packet;

a source port for the packet; and

a destination port for the packet.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the distinguishing factor comprises an identification of an application associated with the data stream.

5. The method as defined in claim 4 , wherein the application is associated with a priority level and the step of selecting a QoS policy setting comprises selecting the QoS policy setting based on an association between the priority level and the QoS policy setting.

6. The method as defined in claim 5 , wherein the application is selected from a group consisting of:

a video application;

a voice application;

a gaming application;

a collaboration application; and

an instant messaging application.

7. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the distinguishing factor comprises an identification of a subscriber associated with the data stream.

8. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the media type is selected from a group consisting of:

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.3 standard;

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.11 standard;

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.16 standard;

a networking technology based on a Long Term Evolution standard; and

a networking technology based on improvements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) standard.

9. An apparatus for adapting a data stream for input to a media access control (MAC) layer adapted to receive a quality of service QoS policy setting, the apparatus comprising a processor configured:

to receive a packet associated with a data stream;

to determine a distinguishing factor associated with the data stream, the distinguishing factor comprising an identification of a media type associated with the data stream;

to select, based on the distinguishing factor, a QoS policy setting for the data stream; and

to signal the QoS policy setting to the MAC layer by:

adding information representative of the QoS policy setting to information in the packet to form a modified packet; and

injecting the modified packet into a network stack.

10. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , wherein the data stream comprises a plurality of Internet Protocol (IP) packets and the processor is configured to determine a distinguishing factor by inspecting a header field in at least one packet among the plurality of IP packets.

11. The apparatus as defined in claim 10 , wherein the header field comprises an indication of at least one information element selected from a group consisting of:

a source address for the packet;

a destination address for the packet;

a source port for the packet; and

a destination port for the packet.

12. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , wherein the distinguishing factor comprises an identification of an application associated with the data stream.

13. The apparatus as defined in claim 12 , wherein the application is associated with a priority level and the processor is configured to select a QoS policy setting by selecting the QoS policy setting based on an association between the priority level and the QoS policy setting.

14. The apparatus as defined in claim 13 , wherein the application is selected from a group consisting of:

a video application;

a voice application;

a gaming application;

a collaboration application; and

an instant messaging application.

15. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , wherein the distinguishing factor comprises an identification of a subscriber associated with the data stream.

16. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , wherein the media type is selected from a group consisting of:

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.3 standard;

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.11 standard;

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.16 standard;

a networking technology based on a Long Term Evolution standard; and

a networking technology based on improvements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) standard.

17. A non-transitory processor-readable medium carrying processor-executable instructions executable by a processor to adapt a data stream for input to a media access control (MAC) layer adapted to receive a quality of service QoS policy setting by:

receiving a packet associated with a data stream;

determining a distinguishing factor associated with the data stream, the distinguishing factor comprising an identification of a media type associated with the data stream;

selecting, based on the distinguishing factor, a QoS policy setting for the data stream; and

signaling the QoS policy setting to the MAC layer by:

adding information representative of the QoS policy setting to information in the packet to form a modified packet; and

injecting the modified packet into a network stack.

18. The medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the data stream comprises a plurality of Internet Protocol (IP) packets and the step of determining a distinguishing factor comprises inspecting a header field in at least one packet among the plurality of IP packets.

19. The medium as defined in claim 18 , wherein the header field comprises an indication of at least one information element selected from a group consisting of:

a source address for the packet;

a destination address for the packet;

a source port for the packet; and

a destination port for the packet.

20. The medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the distinguishing factor comprises an identification of an application associated with the data stream.

21. The medium as defined in claim 20 , wherein the application is associated with a priority level and the step of selecting a QoS policy setting comprises selecting the QoS policy setting based on an association between the priority level and the QoS policy setting.

22. The medium as defined in claim 21 , wherein the application is selected from a group consisting of:

a video application;

a voice application;

a gaming application;

a collaboration application; and

an instant messaging application.

23. The medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the distinguishing factor comprises an identification of a subscriber associated with the data stream.

24. The medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the media type is selected from a group consisting of:

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.3 standard;

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.11 standard;

a networking technology based on an IEEE 802.16 standard;

a networking technology based on a Long Term Evolution standard; and

a networking technology based on improvements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) standard.
