Abstract

Techniques are provided for presenting a route using a route presentation that provides both a context map and one or more detail route maps. Narrative instructions for the route also may be presented. The presentation of the context map and the one or more detail route maps may be interactive. The route presentation also may be user controllable such that a user may control the portions of a route that are printed. The route presentation also may include a re-routing feature that allows a user to request that a new route be identified that avoids a particular maneuver or maneuvers in a route.

Claims (32)

1. A computer-implemented method for presenting a travel route, comprising:

determining, with at least one processor, a route between an origin and a destination, the determined route comprising a plurality of maneuvers;

generating, with the at least one processor, a first map comprising the origin, the destination, and a representation of the determined route;

generating, based on a mapping constraint, a second map comprising less than all of the plurality of maneuvers represented in the first map;

providing text describing instructions for a maneuver in the second map; and

electronically sending the second map and the text describing instructions for a maneuver in the second map for simultaneous display on a client device associated with a user.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the mapping constraint comprises a constraint on the scale of the second map.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the mapping constraint comprises a constraint on the number of maneuvers within the route.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the mapping constraint comprises a segment of the route.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the mapping constraint is identified upon the user selecting a selectable portion of the first map.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the second map comprises a single maneuver within the route.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is represented by an icon indicative of a type of point of interest.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is included within the second map only if an establishment associated with the at least one point of interest has paid for such inclusion.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is included within the second map based on a type of road included within the second map.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is included based on the length of the route.

11. A computer-based system for presenting a travel route comprising one or more processors and one or more storage media storing a plurality of instructions, the plurality of instructions being executable by at least one processor for:

determining a route between an origin and a destination comprising a plurality of maneuvers;

generating a first map comprising the origin, the destination, and a representation of the determined route;

generating, based on a mapping constraint, a second map comprising less than all of the plurality of maneuvers;

providing text describing instructions for a maneuver in the second map; and

electronically sending the second map and the text describing instructions for a maneuver in the second map for simultaneous display on a client device associated with a user.

12. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein the mapping constraint comprises a constraint on the scale of the second map.

13. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein the mapping constraint comprises a constraint on the number of maneuvers within the route.

14. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein the mapping constraint comprises a segment of the route.

15. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein the mapping constraint is identified upon the user selecting a selectable portion of the first map.

16. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein the second map comprises a single maneuver within the route.

17. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is represented by an icon indicative of a type of point of interest.

18. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is included within the second map only if an establishment associated with the at least one point of interest has paid for such inclusion.

19. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is included within the second map based on a type of road included within the second map.

20. The computer-based system of claim 11 , wherein at least one point of interest within the route is included based on the length of the route.

21. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a new route after receipt of a user selection to avoid the maneuver.

22. The computer-based system of claim 11 , the plurality of instructions being further executable by the at least one processor for determining a new route after receipt of a user selection to avoid the maneuver.
