Abstract

A method and system for domain based dynamic traffic steering is described. In one embodiment, a method for domain based dynamic traffic steering involves comparing a domain name with a domain whitelist and a domain blacklist of a packet modifying entity, and if the domain name matches the domain whitelist or the domain blacklist of the packet modifying entity, updating a corresponding Internet Protocol (IP) whitelist or IP blacklist of the packet modifying entity to include an IP address of the domain name. Other embodiments are also described.

Claims (46)

1 . A method for domain based dynamic traffic steering, the method comprising:

comparing a domain name with a domain whitelist and a domain blacklist of a packet modifying entity; and

if the domain name matches the domain whitelist or the domain blacklist of the packet modifying entity, updating a corresponding Internet Protocol (IP) whitelist or IP blacklist of the packet modifying entity to include an IP address of the domain name.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising intercepting a Domain Name System (DNS) request for the domain name.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the packet modifying entity is a value added service proxy that performs a value added service.

4 . The method of claim 3 further comprising:

receiving a request for content;

comparing an IP address associated with the request with at least one of the IP whitelist and the IP blacklist; and

steering the request based on comparing the IP address associated with the request with the at least one of the IP whitelist and the IP blacklist.

The method of claim 4 , wherein the IP address associated with the request is a destination IP address of the request, and wherein comparing the IP address associated with the request with at least one of the IP whitelist and the IP blacklist comprises comparing the destination IP address of the request with at least one of the IP whitelist and the IP blacklist within a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection.

6 . The method of claim 4 further comprising comparing Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) information associated with the request with steering criteria.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the TCP information associated with the request is a TCP port associated with the request.

8 . The method of claim 4 , wherein steering the request comprises, if the IP address associated with the request matches the IP whitelist, sending the request to the value added service proxy.

9 . The method of claim 8 further comprising:

receiving a response to the request at the value added service proxy; and

performing the value added service on the response at the value added service proxy.

10 . The method of claim 4 , wherein steering the request comprises, if the IP address associated with the request matches the IP blacklist, bypassing the value added service proxy.

The method of claim 4 , wherein steering the request comprises, if the IP address associated with the request does not match the IP whitelist or the IP blacklist, sending the request through a bypass route to a destination device that is identified by the request, and wherein the bypass route does not include the value added service proxy.

12 . A system for domain based dynamic traffic steering comprising:

a steering component comprising an Internet Protocol (IP) based steering rules module containing an IP whitelist and an IP blacklist of a packet modifying entity; and

a domain based steering engine comprising:

a domain based steering rules module containing a domain whitelist and a domain blacklist of the packet modifying entity; and

a device configured to compare a domain name with the domain whitelist and the domain blacklist and to cause a corresponding IP whitelist or IP blacklist to be updated to include an IP address of the domain name.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the device is a Domain Name System (DNS) proxy that is further configured to intercept a DNS request for the domain name.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the packet modifying entity is a value added service proxy that performs a value added service.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the steering component is configured:

to receive a request for content;

to compare an IP address associated with the request with at least one of the IP whitelist and the IP blacklist; and

to steer the request based on comparing the IP address associated with the request with the at least one of the IP whitelist and the IP blacklist.

The system of claim 14 , wherein the IP address associated with the request is a destination IP address of the request, wherein the steering component is further configured to compare Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) information associated with the request with steering criteria, and wherein the TCP information associated with the request is a TCP port associated with the request.

17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the steering component is further configured:

to send the request to the value added service proxy if the IP address associated with the request matches the IP whitelist;

to receive a response to the request at the value added service proxy; and

to perform the value added service on the response at the value added service proxy.

18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the steering component is further configured:

to bypass the value added service proxy if the IP address associated with the request matches the IP blacklist; and

to send the request through a bypass route to a destination device that is identified by the request if the IP address associated with the request does not match the IP whitelist or the IP blacklist, wherein the bypass route does not include the value added service proxy.

19 . A method for domain based dynamic traffic steering, the method comprising:

comparing a domain name with domain whitelists and domain blacklists of packet modifying entities; and

if the domain name matches the domain whitelist or the domain blacklist of one of the packet modifying entities, updating a corresponding Internet Protocol (IP) whitelist or IP blacklist of the one of the packet modifying entities to include IP addresses of the domain name.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the packet modifying entities are value added service proxies that perform value added services, the method further comprising:

intercepting a Domain Name System (DNS) request for the domain name;

receiving a request for content;

comparing a destination IP address of the request for content with IP whitelists and IP blacklists of the value added services;

comparing a TCP port associated with the request for content with steering criteria; and

steering the request for content based on comparing the destination IP address with the IP whitelists and the IP blacklists of the value added services and comparing the TCP port associated with the request for content with the steering criteria.
