Abstract

A card transaction device is provided for selecting virtual cards for transactions based on a context. The portable device includes a plurality of virtual cards, and a storage device for storing the plurality of virtual cards. The cards may relate to credit or debit cards, loyalty cards, reward cards, security or access cards, or identification cards, for example. The portable device includes a user interface for a user to maintain rules for selection of one or more virtual cards based on the context of the transaction. The portable device also includes a processor to process the rules and select at least one of the virtual cards based on the context of the transaction.

Claims (32)

1. A system for selecting a virtual card appropriate for a context of a transaction between a mobile device and a card reader, the system comprising:

a plurality of virtual cards;

a storage device that stores a set of rules for selecting one or more of the plurality of virtual cards; and

a processor in communication with the storage device and configured to apply at least one rule from the set of rules to automatically select one or more of the plurality of virtual cards based on the context of the transaction without transaction specific user input,

wherein the context includes information received from the card reader.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the context further includes a location of the mobile device.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor automatically selects several of the plurality of virtual cards appropriate for the context, and wherein a user interface is configured to enable a user to select one of the several of the plurality of virtual cards for use in the transaction.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to create the set of rules.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the rules of the set of rules is manually created by a user through interaction with an interface in communication with the processor.

6. The system of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the rules of the set of rules is automatically created by the processor based on a previous virtual card selection in a particular context.

7. The system of claim 4 , wherein the processor is on a server computer.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the storage device corresponds to an application services module that retrieves the set of rules from a server.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of virtual cards are further defined as information for use of accounts selected from the group of accounts consisting of: a loyalty card, an identification card, a credit card, a coupon card, an access card, and a rewards card.

10. They system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is one of a mobile telephone, a handheld device, a personal digital assistant, a combination device, a laptop, a portable computer, a smart card, a device operable for storing the plurality of virtual cards, or a stand-alone unit that is not physically associated with another device.

11. A method for selecting a virtual card appropriate for a context of a transaction between a mobile device and a card reader, the method comprising:

receiving context information, wherein the context information includes information received from the card reader;

accessing a set of rules for selecting one or more of a plurality of virtual cards; and

applying, by a processor, at least one of the set of rules to automatically select one or more of the plurality of virtual cards based on the context of the transaction without transaction specific user input.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the context further includes a location of the mobile device.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein applying the at least one of the set of rules automatically selects several of the plurality of virtual cards appropriate for the context, the method further comprising:

receiving a user selection of one of the several of the plurality of virtual cards for use in the transaction.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

creating, by the processor, the set of rules.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the rules of the set of rules is manually created by a user through interaction with an interface in communication with the processor.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the rules of the set of rules is automatically created by the processor based on a previous virtual card selection in a particular context.

17. A system for enabling selection of a virtual card appropriate for a context of a transaction between a mobile device and a card reader, the system comprising:

a server computer configured to store a set of context-based rules for selecting one or more virtual cards from among a plurality of virtual cards,

the server computer further configured to communicate at least one context-based rule of the set of context-based rules related to the context with an application to apply the at least one of the set of context-based rules to automatically select one or more of the plurality of virtual cards based on the context of the transaction,

wherein the context includes information received from the card reader.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the context information further includes a location of the mobile device.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the server computer is further configured to create a context-based rule for selecting one or more virtual cards from among a plurality of virtual cards, the set of context-based rules including at least one context-based rule created by the server computer.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the set of context-based rules includes at least one context-based rule created by the mobile device and stored by the server computer.
