Abstract

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for cutting a chamfer into the edge of a material while simultaneously making another cut in the material. The chamfer provides the cut material with reduced susceptibility to top surface edge swell.

Claims (36)

1. A method of cutting a panel, the method comprising:

cutting a wood-based composite panel comprising oriented strand board (OSB) with a saw blade comprising at least one circular blade comprising cutting surfaces, wherein the cutting comprises

rotating the circular blade about an axis, wherein

the rotating thereby cuts with the circular blade a primary cut on a side surface of the wood-based composite panel, the primary cut comprising a tongue-side or groove-side of a tongue-and-groove pattern, and

the rotating thereby simultaneously cuts with the circular blade at least one secondary cut comprising a chamfer of a top surface edge of the wood-based composite panel, wherein the side surface and the top surface share the edge that is chamfered;

wherein the cutting of the wood-based composite panel forms a cut panel comprising the primary cut and the secondary cut, the top surface of the cut panel being defined by a plurality of top surface sides, at least one top surface side having a size less than a size of a corresponding bottom surface side by a distance that comprises a length of the top surface removed by the secondary cut, wherein the cut panel has decreased susceptibility to top-surface edge swell.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sharpening or replacing the cutting surfaces.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cutting surfaces comprise cutting heads approximately evenly distributed around the circumference of the circular blade.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising adjusting the angle of the cutting heads relative to the plane defined by the circular blade.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising adjusting the distance of the cutting heads from the axis of rotation of the circular blade.

6. The method of claim 3 , further comprising replacing the cutting heads.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the primary cut comprises the tongue-side of a tongue-and-groove pattern.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the primary cut comprises the groove-side of a tongue-and-groove pattern.

9. A method of cutting a panel, the method comprising:

cutting a wood-based composite panel comprising oriented strand board (OSB) with a saw blade comprising at least one circular blade comprising cutting surfaces, wherein the cutting comprises

rotating the circular blade about an axis, wherein

the rotating thereby cuts with the circular blade a primary cut comprising a cut through the wood-based composite panel, such that the primary cut comprises a cut from one side of the panel to an approximately opposing side of the panel and forms a side surface of the panel, and

the rotating thereby simultaneously cuts with the circular blade at least one secondary cut comprising a chamfer of a top surface edge of the wood-based composite panel, wherein the side surface and the top surface share the edge that is chamfered and the chamfer shares an edge with the primary cut;

wherein the cutting of the wood-based composite panel forms a cut panel comprising the primary cut and the secondary cut, the top surface of the cut panel being defined by a plurality of top surface sides, at least one top surface side having a size less than a size of a corresponding bottom surface side by a distance that comprises a length of the top surface removed by the secondary cut, wherein the cut panel has decreased susceptibility to top-surface edge swell.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising sharpening or replacing the cutting surfaces.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the cutting surfaces comprise cutting heads approximately evenly distributed around the circumference of the circular blade.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising adjusting the angle of the cutting heads relative to the plane defined by the circular blade.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising adjusting the distance of the cutting heads from the axis of rotation of the circular blade.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising replacing the cutting heads.

15. A method of cutting a panel, the method comprising:

cutting a wood-based composite panel comprising oriented strand board (OSB) with a saw blade comprising at least one circular blade comprising cutting surfaces comprising a first cutting pattern comprising a tongue- or groove-cutting pattern and a second cutting pattern comprising a chamfer-cutting pattern, wherein the cutting comprises

rotating the circular blade about an axis, wherein

the rotating thereby cuts with the first cutting pattern a primary cut on a side surface of the wood-based composite panel, and

the rotating thereby simultaneously cuts with the second cutting pattern at least one secondary cut comprising a chamfer of a top surface edge of the wood-based composite panel, wherein the side surface and the top surface share the edge that is chamfered, wherein the length of the chamfer along the top surface is equal to or less than about 2 inches and the depth of the chamfer along the side surface is equal to or less than about 1/10 inch;

wherein the cutting of the wood-based composite panel forms a cut panel comprising the primary cut and the secondary cut, the top surface of the cut panel being defined by a plurality of top surface sides, at least one top surface side having a size less than a size of a corresponding bottom surface side by a distance that comprises a length of the top surface removed by the secondary cut, wherein the cut panel has decreased susceptibility to top-surface edge swell.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the cutting patterns comprise cutting heads approximately evenly distributed around the circumference of the circular blade, wherein the method further comprises adjusting the distance of the cutting surfaces from the axis of rotation of the circular blade independently of the distance of the cutting heads from the axis of rotation of the circular blade.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the cutting patterns comprise cutting heads approximately evenly distributed around the circumference of the circular blade, wherein the method further comprises adjusting the angle of the cutting heads relative to the plane defined by the circular blade.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the cutting patterns include multiple cutting surfaces.

19. The method of claim 9 , wherein

the length of material on the side surface removed by the secondary cut is less than or equal to about 1/10 inch; and

the length of material on the top surface removed by the secondary cut is less than or equal to about 2 inches.
