Abstract

A point-of-care computer system is provided, including a display positioned in a point-of-care location. The point-of-care computer includes hardware coupled to a frame of a hospital bed.

Claims (58)

1. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network, and

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, wherein the computer hardware is coupled via the communication network to a patient billing computer so that in response to medication usage information being entered into the computer hardware of the hospital bed, the patient is billed for the medication, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

2. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the information received from the pharmacy includes information regarding medication prescribed by a doctor to a patient associated with the hospital bed.

3. The hospital bed of claim 1 , further comprising a reader coupled to the computer hardware, the reader being configured to read patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication identification information.

4. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network,

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, and

a reader coupled to the computer hardware, the reader being configured to read patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication identification information, wherein the medication identification information comprises a signal transmitted from a locked container in which medication is contained, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

The hospital bed of claim 4 , wherein the computer hardware is configured to signal the locked container to unlock to provide a caregiver with access to the medication contained in the locked container if the patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication information are properly verified.

6. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network,

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, and

a reader coupled to the computer hardware, the reader being configured to read patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication identification information, wherein the display screen displays a stored image of the patient after receipt of the patient identification information to permit a caregiver to make a visual verification that a patient supported on the hospital bed is the one shown in the stored image, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

7. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network,

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, and

a reader coupled to the computer hardware, the reader being configured to read patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication identification information, wherein the display screen displays a stored image of the medication after receipt of the medication identification information to permit a caregiver to make a visual verification that the medication matches the one shown in the stored image, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

8. The hospital bed of claim 3 , wherein the reader comprises at least one of a bar code reader and an RFID receiver.

9. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network, and

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, wherein the information received from the pharmacy includes information regarding medication prescribed by a doctor to a patient associated with the hospital bed, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

10. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network, and

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, wherein the information received from the pharmacy includes information regarding medication prescribed by a doctor to a patient associated with the hospital bed, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware prompts the addition of the medication to a patient chart.

11. The hospital bed of claim 1 , wherein the display screen is operable to display a patient chart including scheduled medication information and medication dosage information.

12. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network, and

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to provide inputs to the computer hardware regarding patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication identification information, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

13. The hospital bed of claim 12 , wherein the computer hardware is configured to receive a signal transmitted from a locked container in which medication is contained.

14. The hospital bed of claim 13 , wherein the computer hardware is configured to signal the locked container to unlock to provide the caregiver with access to the medication contained in the locked container if the patient identification information, caregiver identification information, and medication information are properly verified.

15. The hospital bed of claim 12 , wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to enter at least one of a password and user identification information.

16. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network, and

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, wherein the display screen prompts the caregiver to indicate whether medication taken by a patient associated with the hospital bed has been held down.

17. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network,

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, and

an actuator operable to move a movable portion of the frame and wherein the display screen is also operable to display at least one user input that is touched to control the actuator, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

18. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network,

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, and

a mattress supported by the frame, the mattress having at least one air bladder, and wherein the display screen is also operable to display at least one user input that is touched to control a manner in which the at least one air bladder is inflated, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.

19. A hospital bed for use in a healthcare facility having a pharmacy and a communication network, the hospital bed comprising

a frame,

computer hardware coupled to the frame, the computer hardware being configured to communicate with a remote pharmacy computer of the communication network,

a display screen coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the display screen being operable to display patient information and to display information received by the computer hardware from the pharmacy, and

a patient position monitoring system coupled to the frame and coupled to the computer hardware, the patient position monitoring system is configured to monitor movement of the patient relative to the bed frame, and wherein the display screen is also operable to display at least one user input that is touched to control the patient position monitoring system, wherein the display screen is configured to permit a caregiver to confirm the administration of the medication to the patient and the computer hardware transmits a confirmation message to the remote computer.
