Abstract

An illustrative valve is disclosed that includes a valve body with a valve seat and a valve member adapted to sealingly engage the valve seat. The valve also includes an actuator operatively coupled to the valve member via a non-rigid connector, wherein the actuator is adapted for selectively moving the valve member relative to the valve seat.

Claims (30)

1. A valve, comprising:

a valve body;

a valve seat disposed within said valve body;

a valve member adapted to sealingly engage said valve seat;

an actuator operatively coupled to said valve member via a constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector, said actuator adapted for selectively moving said valve member relative to said valve seat; and

means for operatively and pivotably coupling said constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector to said valve member, wherein said means for operatively and pivotably coupling said constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector to said valve member comprises a ball that is at least partially positioned in a recess in said valve member, said ball being operatively coupled to said constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector.

2. The valve of claim 1 , further comprising a spring adapted to urge said valve member against said valve seat.

3. The valve of claim 2 , wherein said spring is substantially tapered along its axial length, a smaller end of said tapered spring being positioned proximate said valve member.

4. The valve of claim 1 , wherein said actuator is pneumatically actuatable.

5. The valve of claim 4 , wherein said actuator comprises an expandable hose that is operatively coupled to said non-rigid connector.

6. The valve of claim 1 , wherein said constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector is a cable.

7. The valve of claim 1 , wherein said valve member is a poppet.

8. The valve of claim 1 , further comprising means for permitting said valve member to move relative to said ball.

9. A valve, comprising:

a valve body;

a valve seat disposed within said valve body;

a poppet valve adapted to sealingly engage said valve seat;

a spring adapted to urge said valve member against said valve seat;

an actuator operatively coupled to said valve member via a constantly tensioned, flexible cable, said actuator adapted for selectively moving said valve member relative to said valve seat; and

means for operatively and pivotably coupling said constantly tensioned, flexible cable to said valve member, wherein said means for operatively and pivotably coupling said constantly tensioned, flexible cable to said valve member comprises a ball that is at least partially positioned in a recess in said poppet valve, said ball being operatively coupled to said constantly tensioned, flexible cable.

10. The valve of claim 9 , wherein said actuator is pneumatically actuatable.

11. The valve of claim 9 , further comprising a Belleville washer positioned in said recess between said poppet valve and said ball.

12. A valve, comprising:

a valve body;

a valve seat disposed within said valve body;

a poppet valve adapted to sealingly engage said valve seat;

a spring adapted to urge said valve member against said valve seat;

an actuator operatively coupled to said valve member via a constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector, said actuator adapted for selectively moving said valve member relative to said valve seat;

a ball that is at least partially positioned in a recess in said poppet valve, said ball being operatively coupled to said constantly tensioned, non-rigid connector; and

a washer positioned in said recess between said poppet valve and said ball.
