Implant derived from bone
View Patent ↗An implant which is particularly suitable for the repair and/or replacement of a skeletal joint, e.g., a vertebral joint, includes a unit of monolithic bone possessing at least one demineralized region exhibiting properties of flexibility and resilience, the demineralized region having diminished or insignificant capacity for promoting new bone growth.
1. An implant which comprises a unit of monolithic bone, the bone possessing at least one demineralized region exhibiting properties of flexibility and resilience, the at least one demineralized region having diminished or insignificant capacity for promoting new bone growth, the implant is configured as an intervertebral disc, wherein upper and lower surfaces of the intervertebral disc are surface demineralized and a cavity of the intervertebral disc is filled at least in part with a gel-forming polymer or gel derived therefrom, the gel forming polymer comprises unsaturated acid-containing monomers.
2. The implant as defined in claim 1 , wherein the acid-containing monomers are grafted onto starch or cellulose.
3. The implant as defined in claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises acellular dermal tissue.
4. An implant, comprising a unit of monolithic bone and small intestine mucosa, the bone possessing at least one demineralized region exhibiting properties of flexibility and resilience, the at least one demineralized region having diminished or insignificant capacity for promoting new bone growth, the implant being configured as an intervertebral disc, wherein upper and lower surfaces of the intervertebral disc are surface demineralized and a cavity of the intervertebral disc is filled at least in part with a gel-forming polymer or gel derived therefrom.
