Abstract

Disclosed are Bisphenol A (BPA), Bisphenol F, Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), and Bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BFDGE)-free coating compositions for metal substrates including an under-coat composition containing a polyester (co)polymer, and an under-coat cross-linker; and an over-coat composition containing a poly(vinyl chloride) (co)polymer dispersed in a substantially nonaqueous carrier liquid, an over-coat cross-linker, and a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer. Also provided is a method of coating a metal substrate using the BPA, BPF, BADGE and BFDGE-free coating system to produce a hardened protective coating useful in fabricating metal storage containers. The coated substrate is particularly useful in fabricating multi-part foodstuffs storage containers with “easy-open” end closures.

Claims (45)

1. A hardenable packaging coating composition, comprising:

40 to 90 percent by weight of a poly(vinylchloride) (co)polymer dispersed in a substantially non-aqueous carrier liquid; and

2.5 to 30 percent by weight of a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer having one or more groups selected from carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups, wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer does not include oxirane groups; and

5 to 30 percent by weight of a phenolic crosslinker;

wherein:

all of the above weight percentages are based on the total non-volatile solids in the coating composition, and

the coating composition is substantially free of mobile BPA, BPF, and aromatic glycidyl ether compounds.

2. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition is completely free of BPA, BPF, BADGE, BFDGE, and NOGE.

3. The hardenable coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the poly(vinyl chloride)(co)polymer comprises finely divided particles dispersed in the substantially non-aqueous carrier liquid.

4. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition includes from 60 to 85 percent by weight of the poly(vinylchloride) (co)polymer, based on the total non-volatile solids in the coating composition.

5. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition includes from 7.5 to 18 percent by weight of the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer, based on the total non-volatile solids in the coating composition.

6. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the phenolic crosslinker is a product of formaldehyde and phenol, xylenol, or p-tert-butylphenyl.

7. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the phenolic crosslinker is a resole type crosslinker.

8. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition includes from about 0.1 up to about 30 percent by weight, on a non-volatile solids basis, of a PVC stabilizer.

9. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer includes methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, propyl methacrylate, or butyl methacrylate.

10. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer has a glass transition temperature of from about 50° C. to about 90° C.

11. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer has a weight average molecular weight of from 5,000 to 50,0000 Daltons.

12. The coating composition of claim 1 , further comprising a lubricant.

13. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the poly(vinylchloride) (co)polymer is a poly(vinyl chloride) homopolymer.

14. The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating composition includes:

60 to 85 percent by weight of the poly(vinylchloride)(co)polymer dispersed in the substantially non-aqueous carrier liquid; and

7.5 to 18 percent by weight of the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer having one or more groups selected from carboxyl groups and/or hydroxyl groups, wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer does not include oxirane groups; and

6 to 25 percent by weight of the phenolic crosslinker;

wherein all of the above weight percentages are based on the total non-volatile solids in the coating composition.

15. A foodstuffs container, comprising:

a metal substrate;

a coating composition applied on the metal substrate, wherein at least an interior surface of the container is coated with the coating composition, the coating composition including:

40 to 90 percent by weight of a poly(vinylchloride) (co)polymer dispersed in a substantially non-aqueous carrier liquid; and

2.5 to 30 percent by weight of a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer having one or more groups selected from carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups, wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer does not include oxirane groups; and

5 to 30 percent by weight of a phenolic crosslinker;

wherein:

all of the above weight percentages are based on the total non-volatile solids in the coating composition, and

the coating composition is completely free of BPA, BPF, BADGE, BFDGE, and NOGE.

16. The foodstuffs container of claim 15 , wherein the metal substrate is aluminum, tin-plate, tin free steel or chromated steel.

17. The foodstuffs container of claim 15 , wherein the foodstuffs container includes a packaged food or beverage product.

18. The foodstuffs container of claim 15 , where the foodstuffs container comprises a metal can.

19. The foodstuffs container of claim 15 , wherein the foodstuffs container includes an under-coat composition having a polyester (co)polymer and an undercoat crosslinker.

20. A method of coating a metal substrate with a hardenable packaging coating composition, comprising:

applying a coating composition to a metal substrate, the coating composition comprising: 40 to 90 percent by weight of a poly(vinylchloride)(co)polymer dispersed in a substantially non-aqueous carrier liquid; and

2.5 to 30 percent by weight of a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer having one or more groups selected from carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups, wherein the functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer does not include oxirane groups; and

5 to 30 percent by weight of a phenolic crosslinker;
