Abstract

A battery pack is configured to reduce weight, enhance battery identification, ensure proper placement of a lid retaining the battery, and facilitate battery pack removal. The battery pack has one or more cells that lack an outer coverage except for a polymer sheathing. The battery pack includes a mating notch on a terminal plate and may include a fingernail notch and/or one or more guide rails. The fingernail notch may be a single depression formed to allow a fingernail to slip onto the battery pack, may be a single depression and a ledge that are side-by-side, or may be formed of multiple ledges and/or depressions. There may be a single guide rail or multiple guide rails. Each guide rail preferably has a hollow interior section that is crossed by one or more ribs or segments.

Claims (35)

1. A battery pack comprising:

a cell having a flattened cross section,

a terminal plate located at one end of the cell, and

a non-terminal plate located at another end of the cell opposite the terminal plate, wherein

the non-terminal plate comprises two guide rails protruding from the non-terminal plate and a fingernail notch.

2. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a part of the terminal plate is plastic.

3. The battery pack as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the terminal plate is coupled to the cell through hot melt adhesion.

4. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a sheathing covering the cell except for the one end and the another end.

5. The battery pack as claimed in claim 4 wherein the sheathing comprises a plastic coating.

6. The battery pack as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the sheathing comprises a polymer coating.

7. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the terminal plate comprises at least one top corner notch.

8. The battery pack as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the at least one top corner notch is a first top corner notch on a first top corner, and the terminal plate comprises a second top corner notch on a second top corner.

9. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein:

the terminal plate comprises a first opening and a second opening;

the battery pack comprises a positive power terminal and a negative power terminal electrically coupled to the cell;

the positive power terminal is aligned with the first opening to permit contact between the positive power terminal and a first mobile communication device terminal through the first opening; and

the negative power terminal is aligned with the second opening to permit contact between the negative power terminal and a second mobile communication device terminal through the second opening.

10. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a printed circuit board electrically coupled to the cell.

11. The battery pack as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the printed circuit board comprises:

a positive power terminal;

a negative power terminal;

a battery temperature terminal; and

a battery identification terminal.

12. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the guide rail has a flat top, a flat bottom, and a curved side.

13. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a thickness of a flattened cross section of the cell is 2.75 mm to 12 mm.

14. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the battery pack has a length of between 40 mm and 70 mm, a width of between 25 mm and 45 mm, and a height of between 4 mm and 8 mm.

15. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the non-terminal plate is less than a thickness of the terminal plate.

16. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the terminal plate comprises a bottom center notch.

17. The battery pack as claimed in claim 16 , wherein a shape of the bottom center notch is rectangular, curved, or trapezoidal.

18. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the terminal plate is chamfered on at least one side.

19. The battery pack as claimed in claim 18 , wherein an angle of the chamfer is between 30° and 60°.

20. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the non-terminal plate comprises at least one ledge.

21. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the guide rail comprises an interior rib in an I-beam form.

22. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the guide rail comprises a cross ribbed pattern.

23. The battery pack as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the guide rail comprises a vertical rectilinear segment and a horizontal rectilinear segment.
