Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure include flame retardant composites, flame retardant nylon fibers, flame retardant nylon fiber carpets, methods of making each, and the like.

7 . A flame retardant composite, comprising:

a polyamide

comprising a first nylon and a second nylon, wherein the first nylon is nylon 6/6 and the second nylon is nylon 6,

an organoclay composition, and

a flame retardant component.

8 . A flame retardant nylon fiber, comprising:

a polyamide

comprising a first nylon and a second nylon, wherein the first nylon is nylon 6/6 and the second nylon is nylon 6,

an organoclay composition, and

a flame retardant component.

10 . The fiber of claim 8 , wherein the organoclay composition is a mineral clay.

11 . The fiber of claim 10 , wherein the mineral clay is selected from the group consisting of: hectorite, montmorillonite, bentonite, beidelite, saponite, stevensite, and mixtures thereof.

12 . The fiber of claim 10 , wherein the mineral clay is montmorillonite.

13 . The fiber of claim 8 , wherein the polyamide further comprises a third nylon selected from the group consisting of: nylon 4/6, nylon 6/9, nylon 6/10, nylon 6/12, nylon 11, and nylon 12.

15 . The fiber of claim 8 , wherein the flame retardant component is an inorganic bromine compound.

16 . The fiber of claim 15 , wherein the inorganic bromine compound is selected from the group consisting of: KBr, NaBr, RbBr, and LiBr.

17 . The fiber of claim 15 , wherein the inorganic bromine compound is KBr.

18 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein the organoclay composition is about 0.01 to 2.5 weight % of the fiber, and wherein the flame retardant component is about 0.01 to 2.5 weight % of the fiber.

19 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein the organoclay composition is about 1.6 to 2 weight % of the fiber, and wherein the flame retardant component is about 1.8 to 2.2 weight % of the fiber.

20 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein the organoclay composition is about 1.6 to 2 weight % of the fiber, and wherein the flame retardant component is about 1.8 to 2.2 weight % of the fiber.

21 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein the organoclay composition is about 1.8 weight % of the fiber, and wherein the flame retardant component is about 2 weight % of the fiber.

22 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein said nylon 6 is about 0.01 to 30 weight % of the fiber.

23 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein said nylon 6 is about 5 to 20 weight % of the fiber.

24 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , wherein said nylon 6 is about 13 weight % of the fiber.

26 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , further comprising an additive selected from the group consisting of: zinc stearate, magnesium stearate, ammonium octamolybdate, zinc stannate, zinc hydrostannate, barium borate, ammonium fluoroborate, barium metaborate, and aluminum trihydrate.

27 . The fiber of claim 8 or 15 , further comprising an additive, wherein the additive is ZnB.

The fiber of claim 8 , wherein the flame retardant component is selected from the group consisting of: KCl, Kl, K 2 SO 4 , KHCO 3 , CF 3 Br, NaHCO 3 , K 3 AlF 6 , KF.2H 2 O, KBF 4 , Na 3 AlF 6 , Na 2 SiF 6 , NaCl, NaI, LiI, LiCl, RbBr, CaCl 2 , NaF, NaI, K 2 CrO 4 , Na 2 SO 3 , Na 2 S 2 O 2 .5H 2 O, NaAcAc, Na 2 C 4 H 4 O 6 .2H 2 O, K 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 2 , K 2 C 2 O 4 , K 4 Fe(CN) 6 .3H 2 O, KOH, KNO 3 , Na 2 CrO 4 , NaNO 3 , NaOH, NaC 2 H 3 O 2 .3H 2 O, Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 C 2 O 4 , Na 2 [Fe(CN) 5 NO].2H 2 O, Na 4 Fe(CN) 6 .10H 2 O, Na 2 B 4 O 7 .10H 2 O, RbCl, and Rbl.
