Abstract

Disclosed herein is a solid-state image pickup apparatus, including a pixel array section in which a unit pixel including a photoelectric conversion section and a charge detection section for detecting charge generated by photoelectric conversion by the photoelectric conversion section is disposed; a driving section adapted to carry out driving of reading out a signal of the unit pixel divisionally by twice as a first signal and a second signal; and a signal processing section adapted to set the first signal read out first from the unit pixel as a reference voltage for a processable input voltage range of the signal processing section, adjust the reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range and carry out signal processing for the first and second signals using the adjusted reference voltage.

Claims (53)

1. A solid-state image pickup apparatus, comprising:

a pixel array section in which a unit pixel including a photoelectric conversion section and a charge detection section for detecting charge generated by photoelectric conversion by said photoelectric conversion section is disposed;

a driving section adapted to carry out driving of reading out a signal of said unit pixel as a first signal and a second signal, the first signal being read out from said unit pixel before the second signal; and

a signal processing section including an analog-digital conversion circuit configured to convert an analog signal obtained from said unit pixel into a digital signal based on a comparison of the analog signal with a reference voltage, the reference voltage being used as a reference for an input voltage range within which an input voltage can be converted by said analog-digital conversion circuit, wherein,

the signal processing section adapted to set the first signal as a range reference voltage for a processable input voltage range of said signal processing section, and

the signal processing section further is adapted to adjust the reference voltage to an adjusted reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range and carry out signal processing for the first and second signals using the adjusted reference voltage

wherein said driving section can selectively execute;

first driving of reading out a signal based on a signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section first and then resetting said charge detection section and reading out a signal based on a reset potential in order to set the reference voltage, and

second driving of reading out the signal based on the reset potential when said charge detection section is reset first and then reading out the signal based on the reset potential and the signal based on the signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section in this order in order to set the reference voltage, and

wherein said analog-digital conversion circuit includes:

a comparator for comparing the analog signal obtained from said unit pixel and a reference signal of a ramp waveform; and

a setting circuit for applying, upon the first driving, predetermined initial voltages to two input terminals of said comparator to carry out initialization of the reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range.

The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said analog-digital conversion circuit carries out, upon the first driving, initialization same as initialization carried out upon the second driving so that a circuit section at a succeeding stage of said comparator operates at a same operation point upon the first driving and the second driving, whereafter the initialization by said setting circuit is carried out.

3. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the circuit section on the succeeding stage stores a voltage value based on a current value corresponding to an output voltage of said comparator.

4. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a reference signal generation section for generating the reference signal of the ramp waveform sets an initial value of the ramp waveform corresponding to the reference voltage set by said setting circuit.

5. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the first signal is based on signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section, and

the second signal is based on a reset potential when said charge detection section is reset.

6. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said driving section is configured to

first read out the first signal in order to set the reference voltage, and

then reset said charge detection section and read out the second signal.

7. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein said signal processing section calculates a difference between the first and second signals.

8. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the first signal is based on a reset potential when said charge detection section is reset, and

the second signal is based on signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section.

9. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein said driving section is configured to

first read out the first signal in order to set the reference voltage, and

then read out the first and second signals in this order.

10. The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein said signal processing section calculates a difference between the first and second signals.

The solid-state image pickup apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said signal processing section is configured to calculate a difference between the signal based on the signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section and the signal based on the reset potential of said charge detection section.

A signal processing method for a solid-state image pickup apparatus in which a unit pixel including a photoelectric conversion section and a charge detection section for detecting charge generated by photoelectric conversion by the photoelectric conversion section is disposed, the signal processing method comprising the steps, carried out by a signal processing section, of:

reading out a signal of the unit pixel as a first signal and a second signal, the first signal being read out from said unit pixel before the second signal;

setting the first signal as a range reference voltage for a processable input voltage range of the signal processing section including an analog-digital conversion circuit configured to convert an analog signal obtained from said unit pixel into a digital signal based on a comparison of the analog signal with a reference voltage, the reference voltage being used as a reference for an input voltage range within which an input voltage can be converted by said analog-digital conversion circuit, the analog-digital conversion circuit including a comparator for comparing the analog signal obtained from said unit pixel and a reference signal of a ramp waveform;

adjusting the reference voltage to an adjusted reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range; and

carrying out signal processing for the first and second signals using the adjusted reference voltage;

executing selectively first driving of reading out a signal based on a signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section first and then resetting said charge detection section and reading out a signal based on a reset potential in order to set the reference voltage, and

second driving of reading out the signal based on the reset potential when said charge detection section is reset first and then reading out the signal based on the reset potential and the signal based on the signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section in this order in order to set the reference voltage, and

applying, upon the first driving, predetermined initial voltages to two input terminals of said comparator to carry out initialization of the reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range.

13. An electronic apparatus, comprising:

a pixel array section in which a unit pixel including a photoelectric conversion section and a charge detection section for detecting charge generated by photoelectric conversion by said photoelectric conversion section is disposed;

a driving section adapted to carry out driving of reading out a signal of said unit pixel as a first signal and a second signal, the first signal being read out from said unit pixel before the second signal; and

a signal processing section including an analog-digital conversion circuit configured to convert an analog signal obtained from said unit pixel into a digital signal based on a comparison of the analog signal with a reference voltage, the reference voltage being used as a reference for an input voltage range within which an input voltage can be converted by said analog-digital conversion circuit, wherein,

the signal processing section adapted to set the first signal as a range reference voltage for a processable input voltage range of said signal processing section, and

the signal processing section further is adapted to adjust the reference voltage to an adjusted reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range and carry out signal processing for the first and second signals using the adjusted reference voltage

wherein said driving section can selectively execute;

first driving of reading out a signal based on a signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section first and then resetting said charge detection section and reading out a signal based on a reset potential in order to set the reference voltage, and

second driving of reading out the signal based on the reset potential when said charge detection section is reset first and then reading out the signal based on the reset potential and the signal based on the signal charge accumulated or retained in said charge detection section in this order in order to set the reference voltage, and

wherein said analog-digital conversion circuit includes:

a comparator for comparing the analog signal obtained from said unit pixel and a reference signal of a ramp waveform; and

a setting circuit for applying, upon the first driving, predetermined initial voltages to two input terminals of said comparator to carry out initialization of the reference voltage so that the first and second signals may be included in the input voltage range.

The electronic apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein said analog-digital conversion circuit carries out, upon the first driving, initialization same as initialization carried out upon the second driving so that a circuit section at a succeeding stage of said comparator operates at a same operation point upon the first driving and the second driving, whereafter the initialization by said setting circuit is carried out.

15. The electronic apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein the circuit section on the succeeding stage stores a voltage value based on a current value corresponding to an output voltage of said comparator.

16. The electronic apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein a reference signal generation section for generating the reference signal of the ramp waveform sets an initial value of the ramp waveform corresponding to the reference voltage set by said setting circuit.
