Abstract

Architectures and techniques for treating conditions of the eye, such as presbyopia, utilize sources of treatment energy, such as electromagnetic energy emitting devices, to implement non-corneal manipulations. According to these devices and methods, the sources of treatment energy are activated to direct energy onto parts of the eye, such as the conjunctiva and sclera, to treat presbyopia. The treatments can affect at least one property of the eye and enhance an accommodation of the eye.

Claims (44)

1. A method for treating an eye in need of one or more of a physiological and a vision correction, comprising:

directing a beam of electromagnetic energy through an anatomical structure of the eye, an intersection of the beam and the structure having a shape of one or more of a spot and a radial line; and

while the beam is directed through the structure, moving the beam over a second anatomical structure of the eye in a pattern of one or more of (a) a plurality of adjacent radial lines and (b) a plurality of substantially parallel lines, wherein the moving comprises applying a force to change a portion of the structure, relative to the second structure, from a first configuration to a second configuration.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the pattern comprises a first line and a second line extending generally along a first direction, and a third line extending generally between the first and second lines.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the pattern comprises a first line and a second line extending generally along a first direction; and

a third line contacting the first and second lines and extending generally along a direction other than the first direction.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the pattern comprises a first line and a second line extending generally along a first direction, and a third line extending between the first and second lines in a direction generally transverse to the first direction.

5. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the third line connects the first and second lines, and the pattern comprises an “H” shape.

6. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the directing comprises forming a pattern in the second structure that is larger than the shape.

7. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the moving comprises moving a spot, so that the beam is focused onto the second structure and moved there along, while being focused as a moving spot of electromagnetic energy; and

the moving is followed by applying another force to move at least part of the portion in a direction back toward the first configuration.

8. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the shape is a spot; and

the electromagnetic energy is patterned onto the second structure in the form of a plurality of radial lines.

9. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the shape is a spot having an area that is about the same as an area of the moving spot; and

the beam is moved over the second structure in a form of a moving spot, so that the beam is focused onto the second structure and moved there along, while being focused as a moving spot of electromagnetic energy; wherein the moving is preceded by applying a force to change a portion of the structure, relative to the second structure, from a first configuration to a second configuration.

10. A method for treating an eye in need of one or more of a physiological and a vision correction, comprising:

directing a beam of electromagnetic energy through an anatomical structure, an intersection of the beam and the structure having a shape of one or more of a spot and a radial line; and

while the beam is directed through the structure, moving the beam across a surface of a second anatomical structure in a pattern of one or more of (a) a plurality of adjacent radial lines and (b) a plurality of substantially parallel lines, wherein the moving comprises applying a force to move a portion of the structure, relative to the second structure, from a first configuration to a second configuration, and the moving is followed by applying a force to move at least part of the portion in a direction back toward the first configuration.

11. The method as set forth in claim 10 , wherein, for each of the moving steps, the lines are substantially equally spaced from the spot.

12. The method as set forth in claim 10 , and further comprising:

directing a second beam of electromagnetic energy through the structure, an intersection of the second beam and the structure having a shape of one or more of a spot and a radial line; and

while the second beam is directed through the structure, moving the second beam across a surface of a second structure in a pattern of one or more of (a) a plurality of adjacent radial lines and (b) a plurality of substantially parallel lines.

13. The method as set forth in claim 12 , and further comprising:

directing a third beam of electromagnetic energy through the structure, an intersection of the third beam and the structure having a shape of one or more of a spot and a radial line; and

while the third beam is directed through the structure, moving the third beam across a surface of a second structure in a pattern of one or more of (a) a plurality of adjacent radial lines and (b) a plurality of substantially parallel lines.

14. The method as set forth in claim 13 , wherein:

the moving of each of the second line and the third beam comprises applying a force to move a portion of the structure, relative to the second structure, from a first configuration to a second configuration; and

the moving of each of the second beam and the third beam is followed by applying a force to move at least part of the portion in a direction back toward the first configuration.

15. The method as set forth in claim 14 , wherein:

the second and third beams are directed through the structure in manners so that the intersection of each and the structure has the shape of a spot; and

the pattern, for each of the second beam and the third beam, comprises (a) a first line and a second line extending generally along a first direction and (b) a third line extending generally between the first and second lines in a direction other than the first direction.

16. The method as set forth in claim 10 , wherein the anatomical structure is a conjunctiva and the second anatomical structure is a surface of a sclera.

17. The method as set forth in claim 16 , wherein:

each of the moving steps is preceded by applying a force to move a portion of the structure, relative to the second structure, from a first configuration to a second configuration; and

for each of the moving steps, the moving is followed by applying a force to move at least part of the portion in a direction back toward the first configuration.

18. The method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein, for each of the moving steps, the lines are substantially equally spaced from the spot.

19. The method as set forth in claim 13 , wherein the moving of each of the second and third beams comprises ablating the second structure.

20. The method as set forth in claim 19 , wherein:

each of the moving steps is preceded by applying a force to move a portion of the structure, relative to the second structure, from a first configuration to a second configuration; and

for each of the moving steps, the moving is followed by applying a force to move at least part of the portion in a direction back toward the first configuration.
