Abstract

An impeller includes a hub, and a plurality of blades supported by the hub, the blades being arranged in at least two blade rows. The impeller has a deployed configuration in which the blades extend away from the hub, and a stored configuration in which at least one of the blades is radially compressed, for example by folding the blade towards the hub. The impeller may also have an operational configuration in which at least some of the blades are deformed from the deployed configuration upon rotation of the impeller when in the deployed configuration. The outer edge of one or more blades may have a winglet, and the base of the blades may have an associated indentation to facilitate folding of the blades.

Claims (18)

1. An apparatus for inducing motion of a fluid relative to the apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a unitary impeller body, including:

a hub; and

a blade supported by the hub, the blade having a proximal end disposed adjacent to the hub and a distal end;

the impeller body having a deployed configuration and a stored configuration, the distal end of the blade in the deployed configuration of the impeller body extending away from the hub, and the blade in the stored configuration of the impeller body being compressed against the hub.

2. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the impeller body includes a plurality of blades disposed adjacent to the hub.

3. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the impeller body includes a trench proximate the proximal end of the blade.

4. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the blade is thicker than the proximal end of the blade.

5. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the blade and the hub are formed from the same material.

6. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the blade is integrally formed with the hub.

7. The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising an expandable sleeve including a mesh and a film disposed around the mesh, at least part of the impeller body being located within the sleeve.

8. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the distance between the distal end of the blade in the deployed configuration and an inner surface of the expandable sleeve is between about 10 percent and 50 percent of a thickness of the distal end of the blade.

9. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the expandable sleeve has a storage configuration and an expanded configuration, the sleeve in the storage configuration having a diameter less than about 4 mm.

10. The apparatus as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the expandable sleeve in the expanded configuration has a diameter between about 6 mm and about 7mm.

11. The apparatus as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the expandable sleeve has an inlet end and a discharge end, the sleeve including a plurality of vanes arranged at the discharge end.

The apparatus as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the blade is formed from a material having an approximately linear stress-strain relationship when the impeller body is in an operational configuration and a non-linear stress-strain relationship when the impeller body is in the stored configuration.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the impeller body is operable to self-deploy into the deployed configuration from the stored configuration.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the self-deployment is driven by strain energy stored in the blade in the stored configuration.
