Abstract

A system and method for sharing electronic content. A sending user can specify one or more criteria that a recipient memory device must have to store the content. The sending user can also specify a digital rights management control that can be associated with the content. The content can be transferred to the recipient if the recipient memory device has the specified properties. Software at the recipient can ensure that the content is handled in accordance with the digital rights management controls specified by the sender.

Claims (66)

1. A method for sharing information, comprising:

receiving, with a server device, a content policy from a sender device, the content policy comprising digital rights management controls for content to be transferred from the server device to a recipient device;

confirming, with the server device, that the recipient device comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy;

in response to said confirming, sending the content and the content policy from the server device to the recipient device that enforces the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy; and

configuring the recipient device for redistribution of the content on a limited use basis.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said confirming comprises determining whether the recipient device includes a particular digital rights management system, further comprising:

in response to determining that the recipient device does not include the particular digital rights management system, transferring the particular digital rights management system to the recipient device before said sending the content and the content policy to the recipient device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising configuring the recipient device for a limited redistribution of the content based on the content policy.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the limited use basis limits the redistributed content to a predetermined number of renderings.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising disabling the content on the sender device after sending the content to the recipient device.

6. A method for sharing information, comprising:

receiving, with a server device, a content policy from a sender device, the content policy comprising digital rights management controls for content to be transferred from the server device to a recipient device;

confirming, with the server device, that the recipient device comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy;

in response to said confirming, sending the content and the content policy from the server device to the recipient device that enforces the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy;

confirming that the content has been received by the recipient device and that the content policy has been applied by the recipient device; and

in response to said confirming that the content has been received by the recipient device and that the content policy has been applied by the recipient device, sending a cryptographic key to the recipient device that is operable to decrypt the content.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

configuring the recipient device for redistribution of the content to other recipient devices based on the content policy; and

collecting fees for the redistributed copies.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said collecting fees comprises debiting an account associated with the recipient device.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein said collecting comprises debiting accounts associated with the other recipient devices.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein said collecting fees comprises debiting accounts associated with the other recipient devices on a per-use basis.

11. The method of claim 6 , further comprising disabling the content on the sender device after sending the content to the recipient device.

12. A method for sharing information, including:

receiving, with a server device, instructions from a sender device to transfer content to a recipient device;

receiving, with the server device, a content policy from the sender device, the content policy comprising digital rights management controls for the content to be transferred to the recipient device;

sending the content and the content policy from the server to the recipient device that comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy; and

disabling the content on the sender device after sending the content to the recipient device.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the sender device is associated with an owner of the content, and the recipient device is associated with a purchaser of limited rights to the content.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the content policy indicates an amount to be credited to an account associated with the sender device based upon the use of the content by the recipient device.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the content is disabled by encrypting the content.

16. A method for sharing information, including:

receiving, with a server device, instructions from a sender device to transfer content to a recipient device;

receiving, with the server device, a content policy from the sender device, the content policy comprising digital rights management controls for the content to be transferred to the recipient device;

sending the content, the content policy, and an advertisement from the server to the recipient device that comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy; and

rendering, with the recipient device, the advertisement based on use of the content by the recipient device.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein said rendering the advertisement initiates a payment to an account associated with the sender device.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein communications associated with said receiving instructions, said receiving a content policy, and said sending the content are conducted over a peer-to-peer network.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the sender device is associated with an owner of the content, and the recipient device is associated with a purchaser of limited rights to the content.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the content policy indicates an amount to be credited to an account associated with the sender device based upon the use of the content by the recipient device.

21. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a plurality of instructions stored therein, wherein the plurality of instructions, in response to being executed, configure a computing device to:

confirm that a recipient device comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce digital rights management controls of a content policy for content that is to be sent to the recipient device;

send the content and the content policy to the recipient device in response to confirming that the recipient device comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy;

configure the recipient device for redistribution of the content to other recipient devices based on the content policy; and

collect fees for the redistributed copies.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of instructions, in response to being executed, further configure the computing device to:

determine whether the recipient device includes a particular digital rights management system; and

transfer the particular digital rights management system to the recipient device before sending the content to the recipient device in response to determining that the recipient device does not include the particular digital rights management system.

23. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of instructions, in response to being executed, further configure the computing device to:

determine whether the content has been received by the recipient device and whether the content policy has been applied by the recipient device; and

send a cryptographic key to the recipient device that is operable to decrypt the content in response to determining that the content has been received by the recipient device and that the content policy has been applied by the recipient device.

24. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of instructions, in response to being executed, further configure the computing device to collect the fees by debiting accounts associated with the other recipient devices.

25. A computing device, comprising:

an interface configured to receive, from a network, a request to transfer content to a recipient device;

a processor configured to:

confirm that a recipient device comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce digital rights management controls for the content per a content policy;

send, via the interface, the content and the content policy to the recipient device in response to confirming that the recipient device comprises hardware and/or software necessary to enforce the digital rights management controls for the content per the content policy;

confirm that the content has been received by the recipient device and that the content policy has been applied by the recipient device; and

send, via the interface, a cryptographic key to the recipient device that is operable to decrypt the content in response to determining that the content has been received by the recipient device and that the content policy has been applied by the recipient device.

26. The computing device of claim 25 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the recipient device includes a particular digital rights management system; and

transfer, via the interface, the particular digital rights management system to the recipient device before sending the content to the recipient device in response to determining that the recipient device does not include the particular digital rights management system.

27. The computing device of claim 25 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

configure the recipient device for redistribution of the content to other recipient devices based on the content policy; and

collect fees for the redistributed copies.

28. The computing device of claim 27 , wherein the processor is further configured to collect the fees by debiting an account associated with the recipient device.
