Abstract

A TANK filter is provided for a lead wire of an active medical device (AMD). The TANK filter includes a capacitor in parallel with an inductor. The parallel capacitor and inductor are placed in series with the lead wire of the AMD, wherein values of capacitance and inductance are selected such that the TANK filter is resonant at a selected frequency. The Q of the inductor may be relatively maximized and the Q of the capacitor may be relatively minimized to reduce the overall Q of the TANK filter to attenuate current flow through the lead wire along a range of selected frequencies. In a preferred form, the TANK filter is integrated into a TIP and/or RING electrode for an active implantable medical device.

Claims (20)

1. An implantable active medical device, comprising:

a bion including electronic circuitry for therapy delivery or detection of biological signals, and an electrode electrically connected to the electronic circuitry; and

a tank filter placed in series between the electronic circuitry and the electrode, the tank filter having electrical inductance in parallel with capacitance and an overall circuit Q such that the tank filter attenuates current flow over a range of selected frequencies.

2. The active medical device of claim 1 , including an elongated lead connecting the electronic circuitry to the electrode.

3. The active medical device of claim 1 , wherein the overall circuit Q results in a 3 dB bandwidth on the order of MHz.

4. The active medical device of claim 1 , wherein the tank filter is disposed adjacent to the electrode.

5. The active medical device of claim 1 , wherein the range of selected frequencies comprises a range of MRI RF pulsed frequencies.

6. The active medical device of claim 1 , wherein the inductance of the tank filter has a relatively high Q, and the capacitance of the tank filter has a relatively low Q.

7. The active medical device of claim 1 , including multiple tank filters disposed in series with the electrode and the electronic circuitry, each tank filter attenuating current flow at a different selected frequency or range of frequencies.

8. The active medical device of claim 1 , wherein the bion includes multiple electrodes, and wherein a distinct tank filter is disposed in series with each electrode and the electronic circuitry.

9. The active medical device of claim 8 , wherein each distinct tank filter attenuates current flow at a different frequency or range of frequencies.

10. An implantable active medical device, comprising:

a bion including electronic circuitry for therapy delivery or detection of biological signals, an electrode electrically connected to the electronic circuitry, and an elongated lead connecting the electronic circuitry to the electrode; and

a tank filter placed in series with the electronic circuitry and the electrode, wherein the tank filter has electrical inductance in parallel with capacitance and an overall Q for attenuating current flow along a range of selected MRI RF pulsed frequencies;

wherein the overall Q of the tank filter results in a 3 dB bandwidth on the order of MHz.

11. The active medical device of claim 10 , wherein the tank filter is disposed adjacent to the electrode.

12. The active medical device of claim 10 , wherein the inductance of the tank filter has a relatively high Q, and the capacitance of the tank filter has a relatively low Q.

13. The active medical device of claim 10 , including multiple tank filters in series with the electrode and the electronic circuitry, each tank filter attenuating current flow along a different range of frequencies.

14. The active medical device of claim 10 , wherein the bion includes multiple electrodes, and wherein a distinct tank filter is disposed in series with each electrode and the electronic circuitry.

15. The active medical device of claim 14 , wherein each distinct tank filter attenuates current flow at a different range of frequencies.
