Abstract

A TANK filter is provided for a lead wire of an active medical device (AMD). The TANK filter includes a capacitor in parallel with an inductor. The parallel capacitor and inductor are placed in series with the lead wire of the AMD, wherein values of capacitance and inductance are selected such that the TANK filter is resonant at a selected frequency. The Q of the inductor may be relatively maximized and the Q of the capacitor may be relatively minimized to reduce the overall Q of the TANK filter to attenuate current flow through the lead wire along a range of selected frequencies. In a preferred form, the TANK filter is integrated into a TIP and/or RING electrode for an active implantable medical device.

Claims (26)

1. An implantable medical therapeutic or diagnostic device, comprising:

an active medical device including electronic circuitry for therapy delivery or detection of biological signals;

a lead in electrical communication with the active medical device electronic circuitry;

an electrode assembly electrically connected to the lead; and

a tank filter associated with the lead and having an inductor in parallel with a capacitor, wherein the configuration or composition of the capacitor's electrode plates are adjusted to raise the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor such that the tank filter has an overall circuit Q to attenuate current flow over a range of selected frequencies.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the overall circuit Q results in a three dB bandwidth on the order of MHz.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the range of frequencies comprises a range of MRI RF pulsed frequencies.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates have a reduced thickness for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates comprise a high resistivity electrode material for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates are comprised of an electrode ink/dielectric powder composition for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates are provided with apertures, gaps, slits or spikes for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates have a relatively greater length than a width, for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the capacitor comprises a dielectric material having a high dielectric loss tangent at the attenuated range of frequencies.

10. The device of claim 1 , including resistive electrical attachment materials for the capacitor, to raise the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

11. An implantable medical therapeutic or diagnostic device, comprising:

an implantable active medical device including electronic circuitry for therapy delivery or detection of biological signals;

a lead in electrical communication with the active medical device electronic circuitry;

an electrode assembly electrically connected to the lead; and

a tank filter associated with the lead and having an inductor in parallel with a capacitor, wherein the configuration or composition of the capacitor's electrode plates are adjusted to raise the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor such that the tank filter has an overall circuit Q resulting in a three dB bandwidth on the order of MHz to attenuate current flow over a range of selected MRI RF pulsed frequencies.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates have a reduced thickness for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates comprise a high resistivity electrode material for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

14. The device of claim 11 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates are comprised of an electrode ink/dielectric powder composition for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates are provided with apertures, gaps, slits or spikes for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

16. The device of claim 11 , wherein one or more of the capacitor's electrode plates have a relatively greater length than a width, for raising the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.

17. The device of claim 11 , wherein the capacitor comprises a dielectric material having a high dielectric loss tangent at the attenuated range of frequencies.

18. The device of claim 11 , including resistive electrical attachment materials for the capacitor, to raise the equivalent series resistance of the capacitor.
